Default High pitched electric motor noise from rear

It is very loud and on all the time. I noticed that when I turn the key on, the noise starts, but then the engine starts.

Is it the fuel pump? Is it because the gas tank is almost on empty?? Where can I find info on how to change out the fuel pump?

Thanks all. -- Oh, and I combed through over 12 pages of threads but didn't find any useful info.

Download the service manual from the below link, it has procedure for replacing fuel filter and pump.

Always keep at least 1/8 tank of fuel. Running near empty is very bad for the pump.

Can you explain your thinking behind this?
(A) External pump so "cooling" is not a factor..
(B) most cars I've seen pull fuel from the bottom of the tank.. where any sediment is already there.

My thought process is, when the tank is almost empty and you are driving the pump would probably suck air from splashing from side to side and more sediment than usual?

It sounds to me that you're talking about the air injector motor that pumps air into the cats, and it's not shutting off.

Surely gasoline has gone through at least three filters before it gets to the injectors, one in the gas pump nozzle line, one in the gas tank and the one beside the fuel pump. With the plastic underground tanks at the gas stations today there is little chance of a major amount of contaminants in our tanks.
Water is a different story.

Usually a bad idea to keep less then 1/2 tank over a long period of time since temperature changes causes moisture to condense in the fuel tank (and we all know water in the tank is not good). Keep listening, you MIGHT have a foaming issue from the return line or somewhere else. If you do, when the fuel pump catches that foam, it'll cause the pump impeller to spin much higher and starve the rail (if a long enough duration). Don't 'crazy' on it, just keep a listen for it repeating itself. If it does it with 1/2 tank of fuel, you need to look for its cause. Good luck, and have fun cruising!
