oil: which brand?
which 1 you use?
shopping for oil i have found big differences in price. for instance: pennzoil ultra platinum synthetic 5 l: $32 cdn; mobil 1 extended performance synthetic 4.7 l: $64 cdn (am in canada). why such a large difference? what can you tell? is mobil higher quality so it justifies the double cost? is there any evidence that proves technically that mobil is so much good? tests? thanks |
Re: oil: which brand?
Hey Phil,
Mobil 1 Synthetic 0-40 European Formula. Can't remember the exact price but Walmart is a good source, reasonable price (mid $30 range). Canadian Tire also sells it, regular price is around $55 for a jug but often goes on sale in the $30 range. Steve |
Re: oil: which brand?
what i found at walmart is this:
https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/mobil-1.../6000198839526 but that is still way higher than from canadian tire! |
Re: oil: which brand?
I don't buy oil or gasonline based on price. I haven't since I was 17 and driving a 240,000 mile Dodge pickup.
I go here: https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.3_en.html Now, the only oil I could find locally was 0W40 (too hot in Texas for that) and 5W40. So I went with 5W40. I won't use 0W40, it's just too thin - and MB now recommends 5W40, they APPROVE of 0W40 but they RECOMMEND 5W40. |
Re: oil: which brand?
found these tests: Synthetic motor oils testing results - North American Motoring
that is scientific evidence. just was i was asking for. tells me how each 1 does. as in the example i posted, where mobil is twice as much as pennzoil but pennzoil does better in the test. that is what i need. but if any has links to more tests will be great. |

Reports show it to be an equal to the Mobil 1 brand in lube tests. It is manufactured in Omaha, Nebraska by Warren Distribution, which is a producer of many lube products for both public & private labels. |

Re: oil: which brand?
the prices shown are in store:
pennzoil ultra platinum synthetic 5 l: $32 cdn; mobil 1 extended performance synthetic 4.7 l: $64 cdn hence my doubt. |

NO. The last few changes I used Castrol EDGE Syntec 5W40. It's the only 5W40 on the 229.3 list I could find locally.

Re: oil: which brand?
I see that Walmart has 5-quart bottles of Mobil 1 0W-40 on sale for $19.99.

Re: oil: which brand?
just got my 2005 coupe ltd on 4th of july. the dealer said changed oil 50 km ago and is semi-synthetic but i rather want to use full synt (and fleece filter)
i want to use pennzoil. locally i can get pennzoil plat euro 5w20, 5w30, or 0w20. or plat ultra in 0w20, 5w20, or 5w30. which 1 you guys think fits better? why? or do i wait until the plat ultra 0w40 is available? thanks |

I'd stick with 5W40 or, since you live way up north, 0W40. You should be able to order it thru thelubricantstore.com - I THINK they sthip to Canada. But c'mon, there must be plenty of MB products on the road up there, I'd think you can find the stuff you need SOMEWHERE locally. |

Thanks. I’ve always thought 0w40 was light for my location but have been reluctant to switch. Now you give me food for thought.
Monitoring oil pressures, I eventually gave up on the 5W50 when I got the SE, it is driven to little, I do annual changes and 5W50 in temperatures below about 60F resulted it just too high of oil pressure at cold start. z I've leaned towards thicker oils since I was a teen ager. Ran 15W50 and 20W50 for years in my GMC truck that called for 5W20 - that engine and truck are on the road today, March of 2013 or 14, on my birthday, the guy sent a a picture of the odometer - 408,000 miles. But with the Crossfires, I won't put ANYthing in there that is not on the 229.3 list. |

Re: oil: which brand?
about post #15:
thank you for the data. the list approved by MB shows 1 that is available in this ranch (5W30), that is the 1 you suggest, so this is the solution. thanks again. boy, even if chrysler did a great job sabotaging this wonderfful car, on the other hand we have this fantastic group that is bringing a terrific help to the owners. |
Re: oil: which brand?
following pizzaguy advice and the results of the test https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...g-results.html i got the pennzoil 5W30 at cdn$40 for 5 lt (purchased 2) and the mercedes filter adviced here too. i mean, the pennzoil platinum euro synthetic
the filter and oil in the car seemed dark, so i dont think what the dealer said that oil had been changed just 50km before is true. at least now am sure what is in there. |
