Default new SAE counting, how will it affect Crossfire?

i read that SAE changed the way HP was counted, under the new system i saw that the STS-V got more horses counted, and the Acura TL dropped from like 270 to 250.

question is, what will be the new HP rating for the Crossfire?

How can you change HP counting? HP is an old unit for engine output. It is defined as the power of 75 kilopond meter within 1 second -> 1HP = 75 kp*m/s
Since the SI units the engine output is counted in W (watt). 1W = 1 J/s = 1 Nm/s.
By doing some conversion of the old units to SI the result is 1HP = 0.7355kW or 1kW = 1.3596HP

All car specifications show nowerdays both HP an kW. HP is still in use because the number is higher and looks better. The Crossfire does 160kW equals 218HP. Now, what does sound better?

Yeah, they say nothing! See this articles: http://waw.wardsauto.com/ar/auto_enginerating_ripup/
http://www.sae.org/certifiedpower/details.htm

I mean, it's known that the manufacturers specifications are always 'better' than in real.

If you take your Crossfire (or whatever you drive now) to a test center, they would tell you something around 210 HP, I'd guess. Manufacturers mostly do measurements on a engine in perfect condition and in a superb environment.

So it's not a new counting of HP but counting HP under real/normal conditions.

Any measurement has:

a) error
b) test variation

Question is how important is the measurement and how important is the accuracy.

In Japan with the manufactures unofficial agreement to limit output they have spent years under measuring outputs, elsewhere every hp or kw is talked about. More important are how the power arrives, where it arrives, torque, list is endless.

....wheel hp is a much more meaningful measurement, if you want to measure how much power actually gets transferred to the pavement. SAE bhp measurements are done on a dynamometer, on an engine equipped with all accessories. However, this does not take in to account losses throughout the drivetrain.

I would recommend that anyone planning mods run a baseline on a chassis dyno, then re-measure after adding parts if you want to be able to quantify any gains for the rest of us. This is common practice in the world of Sport Compacts.

I second this...only true way of measuring baseline hp and any gain or loss after aftermarket parts are installed.

Probably around a whopping 200 hp.

You got rid of crossfire? Awesome, do you have the E90 330? or E46? And how do you like it?

Don't mind the others they are just mad because they are stuck in their slow money pits.

Got pix? I have to drive one, i heard the 258 hp is a huge improvement. For the price though you probably could have gotten a 2002-2003 M3.

So you telling me you prefer a 330i to the crossfire? Impossible lol.

i hope you purchased the "sports package" on the 330i...it "truly" makes this car with the bigger rims (great looking..for oem) pushed out to the fender edge! looks like a mini 5.

i also, think the 7 looks better with the sports package...black shadow line trim, heavy bolstered seats, sport steering wheel and better looking wider rims. tint looks good. the new 750 is a huge improvement over the 745.

I still don't know about this new styling motif. I think they are ruining the best line of cars. I have been a BMW person for the longest time. And I am now going the way of mercedes benz. (They will close the deal when they start offering manuals in their AMG packaged cars)<--- Scary.

that's not my car, that's my dads car.

Bullesye, i hate MB now. all their new styles suck big time, and they are having huge recalls too. those 3-valve per cylinder motors suck too. even AMG using a cheap way to get power Superchargers...
and now coming out with a minivan or a Station wagon if you want to call it that...

the new S-class copies the 7 series alot too.

my buddy has a SLK350, and its very nice thou. i am very happy to start seeing MB roll out their new motors finally. the AMG for the s-class has a awesome motor. with 503HP V8 naturally aspired. thou it is a 6 something liter.

I just like the way MB looks now better than the current line up. They killed the 5 series and 7 series. IMO I think they are ugly as sin. Especially the 5 series, looks like a wrx. They still put up impressive numbers, but I would still look else where.

I saw a new 330i just yesterday, with applied for plates. I expected worse, but I still am a fan of the E46, imo, best looking 3 series ever.

Curious as why you didn't want an M3?
