4th Annual Fall 2010 - Tail of the Dragon GTG - Oct. 1, 2, 3

NOTE:
Beginning next year (2011) I will only be arranging a "FALL" Tail of the Dragon.
Fall is a prettier time of the year for this event and with only one GTG here each year it will free up the "SPRING" for others to plan and/or attend meets other places.

Come to the 4th Annual Fall 2010 CROSSFIRE "Tail of the Dragon" meet October 1, 2, 3

Enjoy the accommodations at the Fontana Lodge in the beautiful mountains of Fontana Dam, North Carolina.
Enjoy meeting other members and some incredible driving in groups around the Smokey Mountains.

Also attend our BBQ Saturday night back at the lodge !!
We plan to begin the BBQ at 6:00 pm with food coming off the grill around 6:30.
We have a large grill and do it up in our own way so don't miss out

Weekend Itinerary

Saturday

Begins at 8:30am with the Crossfire line up at the lodge.
Then around 9:00am we take our convoy of 80 Crossfires in a continuous line (road blocked) to the Fontana Dam (across the Dam) where professional photos are taken by US129photos.com.

We will have a few folks directing you in to the parking area and assisting in getting all our Crossfires parked nicely and evenly to provide a good photo
We are usually there til around 11:30am and then divide into smaller groups for the remainder of the day beginning with a trip 30 miles to Robbinsville for lunch.

Fuel is available in Robbinsville for those who need to fill up.
Then a run through the Cherohala Skyway - (55 miles / 5400ft. peak elevation) and back around eventually back through the Dragon and back to the lodge around 5pm.

There is then time to freshen up and then come down to the Chestnut room at the lodge for our C-I-C-C-I SPONSORED BBQ dinner.
Burgers, Hot Dogs, Chips and Baked Beans will be served to all who attend.
Soft drinks and water will be served but alcohol is your responsibility
We will start the grilling around 6:00 pm and should be starting to eat by 6:30.

Sunday

Line up at 10:00 and start getting ready for another great day!!
Leave Fontana Lodge around 10:30
A run down to Frankiin and then up to Cherokee for lunch.
Then a trip through the Smokey Mountains and over to the Foothills Parkway and back to US129 through the Dragon and return to the lodge.

Dinner will be available back at Fontana Lodge for those who wish to dine there.

Eventually all of us who are staying overnight at the lodge are again welcome to hang out in the comfortable spacious lobby and share stories and reflect on the weekend spent together.
This is just a general outline of the activities planned for our weekend GTG

DRIVING ROUTES FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

Saturday Run...140 miles ....Mapquest Link
Fall Dragon Weekend SAT Route (Turn-by-Turn).pdf

Line up at 8:30 and start getting ready for a great day!!
Leave the lodge around 9:00 in a group (road blocked) and head for the Fontana Dam Visitors Center PHOTO SHOOT (10 minutes away)

Turn right out from the lodge onto Hwy 28
Go 3 miles from the lodge and keep left to the Fontana Dam and across the Dam.
Entrance to the parking lot is on your left.

Professional photos will be taken by US129 photos.com
They will be at the Fontana Dam from 9:30 to 11:30 for our group pics.

Leaving Fontana Dam around 11:30
Watch for Hwy 28 South when leaving Fontana Dam
It is a sharp left fork in the road at a stop sign

Follow Hwy 28 to Hwy 143 right (18 mi, approx 30 min) to Robbinsville.

Lunch in Robbinsville at Papas Pizza (buffet) McDonald's , Wendy's or Subway.
(Your pick, all within a block of each other)
An hour and a half is open for this lunch stop.
I recommend Papas Pizza (all ya can eat $7.29)

Sat 1:30 PM (regroup and leave Robbinsville)

On US129/143 north and watch for US143 fork off to the left
this will become the Cherohala Skyway (NC. hwy 143 & TN. hwy 165) 5200 ft peak.
Take Hwy 360 north right just before the town "Tellico Plains"

Follow Hwy 360 to Hwy 411/72 right
Optional Pit-Stop at Hardy's in Vonore. (Restrooms & gas available)

Continue on hwy 411/72 north to hwy 72 right back to US129 right .
(The Dragon)
Then on to Hwy 28 left and go 9 miles back to the Fontana Lodge on right.

Danimal and a few others will be running this alternate route on Saturday
Anyone interested can join him for this run on Saturday instead of the Cherohala Loop Run. (shown above)

Start your day with a few runs on the Dragon or maybe just sleep a bit later.
Then get ready for day two of some fun mountain driving .

Line up at 10:00 and start getting ready for another great day!!
Leave Fontana Lodge around 10:30

Turnright out from the lodge onto Hwy 28 south.

Follow 28 south to the town named Franklin.

Turn left on Church st

Turn Right on Itola st

Turn left on Palmer st.

Merge left on to 441

Turn right on BIA-468

Turn left on Johnson Arch rd

Arrive in Cherokee

Lunch places are all around the small town of Cherokee.

Follow 441 North leaving Cherokee and enter the Smokey Mountain National Park.
Continue on 441 and about 32 miles through the Smokey Mountain National Park.

Turn left on TN 73 (Little River Rd) Little River Rd becomes Cades Cove rd.

Turn right on 337 and it will become 321.

Continue following 321 to the Foothills Parkway

Turn left onto the Foothills Parkway and follow it to the end at 129.

Turn left on 129 and follow it back through the Dragon to 28.

Turn left on 28 and follow 9 miles back to Fontana Lodge on right
