I've had my XF for about three weeks now. I checked the oil with the dip stick first day I had it and it looked like it was over max but, since the dip stick is a little different, I thought it was probably okay since the electronic reading signaled OK. I was changing my air filters out two days ago and noticed some oil residue around the valve covers on the left side of the block. I noticed just a little fresh oil sitting in one of the bolts.

I decided I'd better drain some oil out so I jacked it up and noticed that the protective cover was loose. Chrysler dealership must've lost the nut clip and just decided to leave it hang (previous owner was a lady, I'm assuming she took it to the dealer).

I had to drain out over a quart before I could get the level to move down below max.

Do you think I need to be concerned considering the oil film around the cover or is this normal?

Either way, I'm fuming about the utter carelessness of whomever serviced the vehicle. Lady probably paid good money for an oil change....

The small cover on top of the valve covers are notorius for developing a leak... they are sealed with an RTV type gasket. If that is where your leak is coming from it is an easy DIY fix and normal....

Thanks MikeR. Are you talking about that small compartment that is bolted to the valve cover? I noticed it had a black gasket sticking out that was breaking apart. I do believe that may be where the seepage is occuring.

That would be the spot , probably what you see breaking apart is the RTV going bad,,, like mikeR said ,,easy fix. diy

and yes, you can buy the RTV at the parts store... there are a few threads on this and how-to...:D

Thanks. If the light torquing doesn't stop it, I'll get me one and give er a try...
