Default strange noise

On the weekend, it was a little frosty. Started my crossfire -no problem. However, I heard a strange sound. Investigated and it seems to be coming from the belt at the front of the motor. Sounds like something is stuck on the belt but I could not see it.

Is that the serpentine blet? Is it okay to drive it a mile or so to my mechanic?

I left it at home and drove my winter beater to work today.

I have an 05 roadster with 80,000 kims (49,000 miles)

thanks

Was it a squealing sound? Belts shrink in cold weather and they can also collect condensation, which can cause slippage.

If it's the squealing type of noise either the belt is a little bit glazed or there was some moisture on it. Not a big deal. You can try buying some spray on belt dressing to see if that cures the problem. Otherwise you can replace the belt or live with the noise.

Could also be signs of a idler pulley or other bearing going in Alt, water pump etc.
Get it checked by two shops before you proceed with a repair.

not so much as a squealing noise but more like a cluncking noise - and it is not consistent - just every ferw seconds which is indicative of a belt rotation.

thanks guys.

I had that "clunking" noise when I hit about that mileage. Was the water pump and they told me I got it to the dealer more or less just in time. Was replaced under the extended warranty. I too thought it was the idler pulley but if it's the pump you can actually see the pulley move up and back because the bearing are shot.

This is NOT a hard job, you can do it yourself ( the belt replacement ).
It will also allow you to check the individual components that the belt operates.

1. you will need a 17mm socket and wrench or pull handle.
see https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...placement.html

While you have the belt off, first inspect it for cracks or separation, replace it if needed.
Inspect the water pump pulley ( it's the black metal one with 4 bolts sticking out ) if it has appreciable play up/down - side-to-side then you will need a new water pump.

Also rotate all the movable pulleys / idlers by hand checking for noises, replace as needed.
