1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
Okay so I saw this on ebay in Germany and talked the guy into shipping to Canada. I was waiting to see it before I posted as I was not sure what I was actually going to get. Well Santa dropped it off early today and it is Very Nice!! It is in a custom wooden box with wheel chocks. The inside bottom comes out and has 4 wooden rounded feet and looks like a display stand. The seller didn't have much info on it but said it was made of tin and looks like a prototype. The car weighs in at about 4 pounds!! Detailed interior but no windshield, the doors and hood do not open and only the front wheels rotate (don't turn) Looks like it was made of a solid brick of metal -metal tires and wheels! Here are some photos from the ebay posting and it looks even better in real life. I told the wife that this will be the last one I buy (she has been very patient with my collecting!) -don't think I can get better than this. Not sure if any other information available out there but think it is one of a kind!

Re: 1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
Certainly can't say I have seen one of these before.
Cant imagine how that was done with a block of steel but it is really cool. New paper weight for the desk. |
Re: 1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
Very cool. I would say the pieces are cast metal, then polished.

Re: 1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
I think the most striking thing about it is the fact that it is a roadster, most if not all the models I have seen have been coupes.
Initially I thought it was plastic that had been plated or metal sprayed, the lack of definition between panels made me think of that, but at 4lbs weight that is probably not true. Neat and interesting model for sure. Edit I think the metal is nickel and it was metal sprayed. I thought that it could be a model to make moulds from but the finish is not the best for that. I suspect that originally the hood and doors etc opened but the spray sealed some gaps. The steering wheel has what appears to be damage from heat. |
Re: 1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
Differently cool an maybe a one off. I hope you can find out who made it an where it came from.

Re: 1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
thanks!
JAMES1549 - Looks like it may have been cast but doesn't look like it was done in pieces -very solid Dave, it is definitely metal all the way through , non magnetic - so it may be tin but it shine like sterling silver!! As you say the body cuts are not deep as they would be if assembled in pieces. And it is very heavy!! |
Re: 1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
Looks like pieces to me. The dash is separate from the interior, the door panels look seperate from the doors themselves. The Chassis has been pinned to the body. The turning wheels must be there own pieces.

Could be an original casting for a mold that may have never been produced. I'm not aware of any 1/18 scale models. A lot of models are built in Germany though. My 1/47 scale model roadster is from Germany.

The model in the post is made up of more than one piece for sure, the bottom looks to have been soldered or brazed on, you can see the joints. The history of it is very intriguing. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cro...aee307621e.jpg |
Re: 1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
I realize they couldn't have done this all in one piece and it looks like the chassis and interior were separate but soldered together. The seats are soldered? to the bulkhead. The door panels look to be separate but they have less gaps than the picture. The passenger side above the door handle is the only place I can get a toothpick through. The body lines do not go through as you can see some places on them that are flush so may have been soldered together before dropping on the chassis. It is a heavy weight and the body is one solid piece, that is where I came up with it "looks like it was made of a solid brick of metal" I am very happy with the purchase of this unique piece and appreciate any input!

Re: 1/18 scale Crossfire Roadster prototype?
I think I will wait till I get a coupe for a good deal and make a roadster too. I think this one will stay as is - it is very beautiful "in the raw". Make sure you post your yellow roadster when you get it done!! Ron

I don't think you will have any luck on any thread since I think mine is the only one made (not for sale) The last WTB 1:18 roadster (black) thread is older - last post was 2013! Some one will have to make one from a coupe I think - lots of time on peoples hands these days......
:) Yeah, especially if someone wants a miniature PROTOTYPE/CONCEPT one! :) . |
