Default Fog Lamp Design Change

Just thought I'd share this tidbit you the folks on the forum. I had a problem
a while back, where a cap fell off the end of the fog lamp assembly on
the drivers side. This left a little shinny cap bouncing around inside the
lamp assembly.

I had this replaced, under warrant some six months to a year ago, but for
some reason the same thing happened to the replacement. So, back to
the shop I went. While the service center guys were ordering the new part,
they found that the SRT-6 fog lamp assembly had been replaced by a new
assembly. Well, what do you do? You want to stay original, but if the part
if broke, and the manufacture says this is the replacement, you have it
installed. So, I did.

Just got the car back, and when I look at the fog lamps (both replaced so
they will look alike), I see a marked difference in the styling. Honestly, I'm
a little concerned with what impact this may have to the cars long term (30
or more years) value. Has anyone else had their fog lamps replaced with
the new style?

Do a search in the Exterior & Lighting area of the forum.
This subject has come up before - lots of us have had out lights replaced.

Spensley, thanks for your reply, and the pointer. I did search the exterior
and lighting forum, but what I had found did not address my specific
question, which went to impact to long term value. i.e., should this be a
common problem (which it does appear to be), those SRT-6's which do not
experience the problem and keep the original fog lamps, will have
greater worth. This will be an even greater difference if only a few SRT-6's
manage to keep those little caps in place.

So, in that respect, I don't see where this topic has come up before. I
could be wrong, and maybe missed something in a thread about polishing
the lens covers. So, if you have a more specific pointer, I'd sure appreciate
the help.

I think if you have the old style fog lights (the type that fall to bits), the car will be worth a few bucks less than if it had the new lights on. You're effectively driving around in a car with known defective lamps.
If you're concerned what the value of the car will be in 30 years time, the fog lights should be the least of your worries.

Regarding AMGLover's post...
Have you thought that the 2005 you looked at had already had the lights replaced?

If you find someone that can provide an answer that far into the future, will you please ask them to provide us the winning lottery numbers for next week?

Hmmm, me thinks you are talking about non-SRT versions when you cite
'04 models. I don't know if the fog lamps are diff between SRT and non,
as I never really looked that close... Also, don't know about a third
version, I've only seen what I had original and what is now installed. There
are differences, not just in the bulb assembly, but the reflective shell as
well.

One might logically think this the case. However, my experience has been
that in the collector market, originality is all important. Warts and all. Why
if your paint doesn't have the normal factory "orange peel" look, so prevalent,
you can be dinged. A car that is 100% original will usually take more money
than one modified, for any reason.

I guess? I just thought it was somewhat comical that you were insisting on an answer to a specific question, when in fact, there isn't a person on this earth that can answer it with any validity. But if you find someone that can tell you the difference in price with the different fog lamps, and 30 years from now to boot, please let us know. Sorry if I touched a nerve.

And I went to all the trouble of putting a smiley on the post. Sorry, my
wife say's my humor is not appreciated by most folks. However, I might
point out that it must have been your nerve tweaked, to feel the necessity
of your response. Sorry, again, if my question lit off your "Jeez, how stupid
can you get" meter. Perhaps we can let this die here, as it is notadding
one wit to a useful conversation.

On my first fire, an '04 the cap fell off, and now my new '05 did the same thing. They did replace it with the new style. The dealership told me it was something I was doing to make this happen, glad it wasn't just me. Both the SRT and limited had the same style of fog lamps.

I had one fall off my '04 coupe, it was replaced under warranty. Six months later it fell off again, when I called the dealership to tell them they said they were going to replace both of them with a new upgraded set. If the '05 SRT6's are the same as the '04 coupe I hope I'll have one fall off before it goes out of warranty.

My daughter came into the house last night and asked me to come outside to look at the cars. She pointed out that on each Crossfire one of the fog lights were not working on each one. When I looked, I saw the center cap had popped out, my left, her right. Go figure. Time to take them back to the dealer.
