License/Registration Fee Rant
Ouch!! Many high fees everywhere.
In Minnesota, we used to pay 100's of dollars annually for license fees, but good 'ol Governor Jesse (The Body) Ventura change it in 2000 (or maybe it was 1999). It's one of the best pieces of legislation he ever signed.
Here's the current price structure:
How much is vehicle registration in Minnesota?
First-time registration is based on the value of the vehicle. The first renewal is a maximum of $189, while second and subsequent renewals are a maximum of $99. For vehicles 10 years of age and older, the minimum registration charge is $35. Motorcycles are $10 annually, and mopeds are $6 annually.
In other words, you get hit with a high license fee when you buy a new vehicle, year 2 is $189, year 3-9 is $99 and after that it's $35 per year.

I am in AZ as well and felt your pain. Considering we don't have personal property tax here, we pay about the going rate as the folks in the Midwest are paying and it slowly goes down year over year. On the bright side we do get to drive on the crumb rubber (carpet)
which eases the stiffer ride of the SRT. I will watch for your SRT SIX plate! I am in a black SRT with plates that say URNZWAY....see ya out there!

Plus they run 1-2 years behind. I just paid for the last year we lived in WV. Had to give 'em ~$550 total for the 01 Accord and 05 4Runner. Grrr.
Damn! I'm glad I live in the Commonwealth.
I paid sales tax when I bought the car (6%) and the registration is $36 every year - that's it - just $36.
You do have to buy plates for it, and I think that was about $60. But once you buy the plates, you keep them forever (unlike our neighbors in Ohio), and you can even transfer your plate from one vehicle to another. My father had the same plate for 15 years or so. He had to get a new one because PA changed the design of the plate!
All that said, though, I think I would rather live in Arizona and pay the big bucks. After all, my car is wrapped in a Car Jacket for 3 months. I'd gladly pay $500 to change that into 3 months of warm weather and nice roads!
