Ouch!! Many high fees everywhere.

In Minnesota, we used to pay 100's of dollars annually for license fees, but good 'ol Governor Jesse (The Body) Ventura change it in 2000 (or maybe it was 1999). It's one of the best pieces of legislation he ever signed.

Here's the current price structure:

How much is vehicle registration in Minnesota?

First-time registration is based on the value of the vehicle. The first renewal is a maximum of $189, while second and subsequent renewals are a maximum of $99. For vehicles 10 years of age and older, the minimum registration charge is $35. Motorcycles are $10 annually, and mopeds are $6 annually.

In other words, you get hit with a high license fee when you buy a new vehicle, year 2 is $189, year 3-9 is $99 and after that it's $35 per year.

perhaps I've missed something, but here in Nashville TN, my registration fee is $79.00. I think that includes tags, titile, taxes...

I think the states that have PAVED roads pay the higher fees!

That's why, in Alabama, we pay "ad valorum" for our vehicle fees. A litteral translation from the Latin: "Add Burden".

"Tho, mine was only $356 for this year. My '03 Tahoe was $426. They do use Kelly's.

I am in AZ as well and felt your pain. Considering we don't have personal property tax here, we pay about the going rate as the folks in the Midwest are paying and it slowly goes down year over year. On the bright side we do get to drive on the crumb rubber (carpet) which eases the stiffer ride of the SRT. I will watch for your SRT SIX plate! I am in a black SRT with plates that say URNZWAY....see ya out there!

Yup. In WV you pay sales tax when you buy a car, an annual registration fee, and personal property taxes on it every year that you own it.

Plus they run 1-2 years behind. I just paid for the last year we lived in WV. Had to give 'em ~$550 total for the 01 Accord and 05 4Runner. Grrr.

Damn! I'm glad I live in the Commonwealth. I paid sales tax when I bought the car (6%) and the registration is $36 every year - that's it - just $36.

You do have to buy plates for it, and I think that was about $60. But once you buy the plates, you keep them forever (unlike our neighbors in Ohio), and you can even transfer your plate from one vehicle to another. My father had the same plate for 15 years or so. He had to get a new one because PA changed the design of the plate!

All that said, though, I think I would rather live in Arizona and pay the big bucks. After all, my car is wrapped in a Car Jacket for 3 months. I'd gladly pay $500 to change that into 3 months of warm weather and nice roads!

That's a good point -- but it's six months of great weather and six months of uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, shall we call it "intense global warming"? You may need a car jacket in the winter, but we can get heat soak just parking the car in the garage in the summer!

we can keep our plates now. the plates on my 99 Wrangler finally were rusting through so i got a new set this year.

and unlike PA residents, i can drive my Jeep with the doors off and not be hassled by "the man."

Let's not even talk about State Inspection.

I was mistaken... $79 + $9 emissions fee. Personalised tag is $35.
