Smile Stock exhaust without muffler = AMAZING!

I had a local shop remove the muffler after the 3-way cat in the back and reuse the stock tips, i did have him move the tips about an inch and a half out more, it looks much better.

It sounds like a V8 honestly very gurgly, still very quiet no way you'll upset your neighbors. I was hoping it would be a little louder honestly. Absolutely no rasp, which was my concern. No resonance at highway speeds either. Total cost $104, sound priceless(ok couldn't resist)

Has anyone else done this?

How's the sound coming from in back of the car while accelerating? I had the resonator and rear cats removed and the exhaust sound comes through the back end a little more than I'd like. Post up pics of underneath to see the custom work.

I did this and it is good. Been trying to pass this idea along for some time. I added the 4" stainless wye to complete the deal. Less weight also.
ENJOY Woody

No sir, I only did the exhaust because I could remove the exhaust and if I did not like it I could put it back on with minimum fuss. I like to move cautiously if possible and this was a simple test. With no muffler I got a tone that I did not like untill I added the wye splitter. WOODY

The splitter made a difference?

Waldig what exactly is a wye spliter? only complaint after driving today, is at full throttle in the mid-upper ranges it makes a whoosh sound which im wondering if that might be because i used stock tips on that big 3inch y pipe. Did you experience that sound waldig?

I got my Magnaflow "Y" pipe from www.autoanything.com for around $26. Not quite as nice as Waldig's though.

Hey, can you post a sound clip? I may be interested in doing this if it sounds like I
think it might.

Woody,

Peabody here, I stumbled into your wayback machine and had a couple of questions for you.

You ordered the two pipes above ? Cost about $200 (seems high for two pipes?), plus you added tips, and that's what replaced the factory muffler ? I assume you kept the resonator?

I'm looking at getting a nicer sound from my SRT6 without getting rediculously loud, and no drone (would love to keep the factory tips though). Unfortunately it seems our options are somewhat limited on the SRT6, or I'd pick up that $350 Magnaflow catbacksystem advertised here.

Interestingly from everything I've read, it seems like Mercedes did an excellent job designing the factory SRT6 exhaust system, as other then making it sounds nicer, I don't think I've seen anyone really get useful gains from their attempts to re-engineer it.

Thanks,
Brian

I actually dropped the stock tips and went with the 2.5 inch y-splitter pipe at the back where the muffler was. no way to record but all i can tell you is more gurgle,no pops, and no drone at all. I have gotten many compliment for its sound, everyone thinks its a V8 and are shocked when i tell them its just 3.2 liter v6. I'll take some pictures of it when i get a chance and sorry no way to audio it unless someone in stl can do it for me.

Im curious to the "loudness" factor of removing the muffler vs. the resonator...
