Brian that is very tempting, but it's still a hell of a long drive down there. When I done a search on the location I was hoping it was in northern Texas and was pretty bummed to find it was in southern Texas.

That gives a top speed of 193.6 mph vs. air resistance at sea level.

And just for grins, lets look at what the mechanical top speed is. As we all know the engine will rev to 6,200 rpm with a custom tune. Take that and factor in a gear ratio of 0.831 for 5th gear on the transmission, and a ratio of 3.07 for the differential, gives us an overall gear ratio of 2.55. (That's 0.831 x 3.07 = 2.55) Which means that for every 2.55 rpm the rear wheel will go around once.

Now factor in the size of the standard rear tire:
The tire is a 255/35-19, which means it is 255 mm wide (or 25.5 cm wide). The sidewall is 35% of the width, which means it is 89.25 mm tall. That's 3.514 inches tall. Since it is mounted on a 19" rim, add 19 + 3.512 + 3.514 = a diameter of 26.03. The circumference of a circle equals its diameter times Pi. So C = 26.03 x 3.14159 = 81.78 inches.

So, for every revolution of the tire, the car travels 81.78 inches.

For every 2.55 revolutions of the engine (rpm) the tire turns 1 times in fifth gear.

So RPM / 2.55 x 81.78 = how far the car will move in inches in 1 minute.

6200 / 2.55 x 81.78 = 198,837.65 inches per minute.

Multiply the number of inches per minute by 60 (minutes in an hour) and you get inches per hour. Divide the inches per hour by 12 and you get feet per hour. Divide the feet per hour by 5280 feet in a mile, and you get miles per hour.

198,837.65 x 60 = 11,930,258.82
11,930,258.82 / 12 = 994,188.24
994,188.24 / 5280 = 188.3 mph

So, at 6,200 rpm, with standard size tires, an SRT-6 can go 188.3 mph.

That's interesting since, we think that with a pulley, CAI, mani's and a tune, it will produce enough horsepower to overcome air resistance up to 193.6 mph. It's very interesting that both numbers are so close - about 5 mph!
tom2112, thanks for doing all the math to see what the top end of an SRT 6 will do on paper. I know I probably couldn't do it, the 70's were to good to me . The 285's I'm running on back are 26.9" (683mm) tall, witch are 3.3% taller than the 26" (661mm) 255 OEM's. So using some of your math I came up with 194.5 mph with the 285's compared to 188.3 mph with the 255's at the same RPM's. Is that correct?

Wow Tom, your math skills rock!!! Ok for the last time I'll say I called it.. 190 plus or minus 5 heavy modded! Steve, you are running 285 ps2's right? Hope everyone else has tires rated for this... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=35

Yep, I'm running those expencive A$$ PS2's. 285/35 ZR/19 (92Y) on back & 245/35 ZR/18 (92Y) on front. They hit me for $1,550 mounted & balanced, but you can't put a price on having a tire that shouldn't come apart on you at high speeds.

Yes, you're correct Steve.

In fact, I can save anyone else a bit of math. If you've got different size tires, figure how much bigger they are in %. Then multiply 188.3 times 1 plus the percent. For instance: Steve's tired were 3.3% taller, so multiply 188.3 times 1.033 and you get 194.5 mph.

JHM2K makes a good point too. The tires will probably balloon a bit at that speed. But I have no idea how to calculate that. So it is safe to say that the mechanical top speed is a little higher than 188.3 mph on standard tires.

Like the questimating wording but I would also agree. Those numbers are a bit high SRT or not!

The only way that I would believe you would be to see a camera shot of this at 185!

Yup, crusing at 185, holding the wheel with one hand and trying to get a good focus with the camara on the speedo with the other . I wouldn't ask anyone to ride with me at that speed to snap a pic. When spring/summer gets here I might try to show some proof of what she will do. Get some friends with cell phones to run block for me, but the pic might be a little fuzzy .

I want to see a camera shot from a chase plane. A video of the entire process of disintegration can be posted as a warning. I wish I knew something about auto aerodynamics at those speeds. I'll bet you could gain a few mph just by removing the side mirrors.

I one of them slow pokes... only 135mph on the front straight at California Speedway... had to lift, the pucker factor of that wall is very intimidating!

Cheers!

Raced a Kawasaki biker going 173 mph. I was right on him.

My old best was 150. Did that about a half dozen times.
New personal best is 160 with the SC belt slipping and squeeeeeling like crazy before I backed off.
Will repost once I get that resolved.

About 145 for me. I say about because I took a quick glance at the speedo just after backing off and the needle was dropping past the 145 mark. Got there pretty quickly from 80 and it felt very stable. Steve, I understand why you wouldn't want to take a passenger along at that speed and totally agree. Maybe you could use an interior mounted vedio camera focused on the instruments on maybe a helmet-cam. just a thought, you could work out the details.

Really at the 186 mph, the car was very stable so a picture probably could be snapped at top end. But I'd rather be clocked on a radar gun since some have said the speedometer might not be accurate, but I'm sure it is. My car is still in hibernation, but not for to much longer.

Borrow a GPS and it will record the top speed using a satellite coordinate system. Safe and accurate.

BTW the math is good but I have to wonder what the slippage of the tires is at those speeds. The tire loading is great and the flex accounts for a measurable amount of slip.

Enjoy Woody

Woody, are you trying to scare the crap out of me, it's scarey enough just going that fast? Are you saying that my tire's are slipping and not really making good contact on the road? I was thinking that at 186 mph that the circumfrence of the tire would grow at least an inch and I actually would have been going faster.

According to Mickey Thompson's site, radials don't grow when spun at high speeds. Non-radial tubed tires do (like professional drag slicks). I thought that was interesting, but it makes sense. The steel belts in a radial aren't going to stretch, so the tire remains the same size.

I guess that does make good since. I seen a video one time of a tire rotating at a very high speed in slow motion and that thing had what looked like bubbles or knot's on it. I don't remember what kind of tire it was, but it was a long time ago.
