Check Transmission Fluid?!?

How the heck do you check the transmission fluid on these cars?

Re: Check Transmission Fluid?!?

I wrote up using a long zip tie, and you use it to hit the bottom and read the depth of the fluid. Factory manual shows the depth versus temp.

I overfilled mine and found that it willPUMP THE EXCESS OVERBOARD thru the vent.

Thanks guys. Damn. $75 for a friggin dip stick that they should have included with the car.

I guess I'll be checking out the Woody-Ziptie Method. ;)

I knew where the fill tube was, but like Tom, I can't believe there isn't a dip stick...I will go by the junk yard tom...a cummins diesel dip stick should do the trick, they are long....I'll get you one as well....give me a little time to catch up on work now that I am back from the Dragon gtg...

Re: Check Transmission Fluid?!?

the reason for no dipstick was the lifetime fluid in the tranny. now after many tranny failures m/b rec. flushing at 40k. the ebay tool is easy to use anbd priced decently

Re: Check Transmission Fluid?!?

So I am reading ~40k it is recommended to flush/change the auto tranny fluid. Good news is I am only at 14k with my SRT6.

Off topic, but any suggestions/insight when to change the tranny fluid in an MT6? I've got two of those at 34k and 14k. I do my Audi A6 MT6 about every 60k.

Same question about MT6. I know i'm not a SRT but need the experts....on cold weather the 2nd gear is hard to get and after reviewing recent posts about the shape of fluid differential i don't belive the "No service is required" part....(see service manual excerpt below)

Manual Transmission Fluid
No service is required or recommended for the manual transmission. If required, use fluid approved to MB 236.2.
SAE 5W-20 meeting API SL or GF-3 Engine Oil, such as Mopar part number 04761872AB, may be subsituted.

Question: May a Mobil1 extended performance 5w-20 do the trick? Or stick with Mopar (i.e:P/S fluid from mopar is the Pentosin CH11 S and so on...)
https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...nce_5W-20.aspx

salu2

BTW Goldwing: My 97' C4 avant requires automatic fluid every 45k (is not a tiptronic though...better check with Blauparts)

Throwing this out there but I have one of these tools so anyone in MN that needs to check theirs, shoot me a PM and we can figure something out.

I picked up a drain clog tool from Harbour Freight for $3.99. I cut the end to 7cm... Works pretty good!

Re: Check Transmission Fluid?!?

Manual transmission fluid.
From the 2004 Owners Manual in the SRT-6 documentation.

"Manual Transmission Fluid No fluid service required.
Only use fluid approved to MB 236.2.
SAE 5W-20 engine oil, meeting API SL or GF-3, may be substituted."

From my 2004 Owners manual.
"Mopar ATF+4 Type 9602 Automatic Transmission Fluid"
(Automatics are to use Shell 3403)

Maybe Mopar ATF+4 Type 9602 is MB 236.2 approved, probably not, but it is a bit confusing.
I have 2004 Owners Manuals from the US and Canada and they both say the same as my Canadian version.
The manuals are both #81-026-0445 first Editions.

If I was to change mine I would be inclined to use the Mopar ATF+4 oil, but I would check carefully first.

My bet is probably not, one is a low viscosity engine motor oil (for the manual) the other an Automatic Transmission Fluid.....

I'm just scared to death with the specs, double clutch slowing down at traffic lights feels like tranny is moving a lot of fluid but only calls for 1.9 qts...hence the question about viscosity.
"Manual Transmission Fluid 1.8 L (1.9 qts.)"

Re: Check Transmission Fluid?!?

1) Does the SRT-6 have a manual transmission? Out SLK32's only came with the 5-sp auto.

2) MB states that that 236.10 fluid must be used.
Through hours of research, I found that we can use the newer (7-speed) fluid (MB 236.12)

3) Shell 3353 is 236.12 certified. I bought a case at $9.26/qt. The container doesn't have any "generic" ATF statements. It says: Meets MB 236.12 spec for use in MB 7-speed transmissions. Also for use in older 5-speed auto trans. Backwards-compatible with 236.10 fluid.

**Edit: I'm talking the 5-speed auto (Tiptronic) tranny / ie. 722.6 **

Double de-clutching? I thought that went out years ago, I use the synchromesh and save the effort. I find the engine slows down or speeds up fast enough for me.

Good enough to start a new thread where it belongs, Technical & Modifications, not on the SRT-6....
The point of "de-clutching" is to spare the load on to your synchromesh....specially at lower gears…In my opinion matching lower rpm engine speed to tranny speed is a guarantee of a long lasting synchromesh...

Respectfully.
