I am looking to buy an SRT6 coupe and am trying to learn about the car. I have driven a friends 06 Limited Coupe and was surprised. For a sports car....it's easy to get in and out of, comfortable seating and ride good enough for a long trip, great performance for what it is, looks like a sports car - lots of tread on the ground, alot of car for the money, interior trim, well.... "it is what it is".
What are the typical problems with the SRT6? What to look for when checking one out? What mods are preferred that won't scatter internal
engine, tranny, and rearend parts all over the interstate?
Knowing what you know now from your experience, what advice would you give me about buying one. Thanks for your inputs.

IMO the SRT-6 is the best bang for the buck on the market. The most typical mods are CAI, SC or crank pulley, and a custom ECU tune. With just these mods, you are in the low 12 to high 11 sec 1/4 mile range. The SRT will do between 156(rev limiter) and 180 MPH depending upon mods, and the rev limiter being removed. These are very reliable cars, but have a couple of common issues. The inter-cooler pump, the relay control module solder points, and the crankshaft position sensor. Even if you had issues with all three of these, you are looking at less than $200 to fix these issues with how-to's from the forum.

Good luck, you will not regret the purchase of one, and I have never read a post where anyone that has purchased one has regretted the decision.

Search is your friend.

But a few quick hitters here.

The intercooler pump for the supercharger seems to go out on many of the SRTs around 25,000 miles. Ask whether any work has been done there. If it doesn't accelerate all that well, that is one of many possible explanations.

Another problem with all Crossies is rust on the undersides of the doors. Get on down and check it out.

A few of the posters here have SRTs to sell that have had the mods properly done. Maybe. I wouldn't be surprised if there are many half-arsed mods out there now.

First look for a car with relatively few miles. Hopefully it has not been modded.

If you can't swing a low-mileage car, go for a higher-mileage one-owner car. Fewer variables.

I have also been on the market for about two weeks. I am taking my time looking around for the best mileage/deal. I have had 2 SS's, a Firehawk, and an 04 GTO. I was originally thought I might want an CTS-V before switching to a SRT-6. I have never driven on so just tonight I went up to my local carmax and drove a SSB with 26k. I know I'm gonna get flamed here, but I got to tell ya guys....I wasn't impressed. I heard the whine so I know it didn't have an I/C problem and the s/c was working. It just didn't seem to go as much as I expected. When it was idling I also noticed alot of chatter from the top end. Is this normal for these engines? Maybe this was a slow one or something lol. But I will say this, I did love the feel of the interior, and sitting and driving it. Someone better slap me cause tonight I started to look at Z06's.....

Sounds like one to walk away from. Neither of my SRT's have a chatter sound at idle.

Unless you are a former F-16 pilot.....
Neither, including the Bone stock version, would leave you unimpressed.;)

Sounds like there are few typical problems. When these are repaired is it with an updated design that permantly fixes the problem, like the tranny leak for example.
IT'S SAD to think you can find rust on the door bottom or anywhere for that matter. I thought car rust had been resolved 3 or 4 decades ago.
I don't want a car that's going to become a rust bucket!!!!
How about part and tech support is that of concern? Do you rely on Chrysler, MB, this Site or aftermarket?

with approx 2000$ in mods you have a car that will run high 11's . add the cost of the car say 20k total 22k and you have a car that gives the z06 a run and isnt in everyones driveway. find a 2005 z06 for under 25k and ill buy it:D

honestly these cars are a love it or hate it car. not much middle ground. if you are having second thoughts already maybe something easier to mod and readily availble would be a better hot rod for you. if you polled 80% of the members on here they will tell you they wanted the car the first time the ever saw it. no hesitation. with only approx 4000 units built its rare and fast. deadly combo!

Why didn't you guys/gals by a drag racer????? SRT6's are SPORTS CAR's not drag car's. It should be appreciated for how it could perform on a road track not how fast in the 1/4 mile. Maybe you should put bicycle tires on the front just think how much you would reduce windage!

ripit you have no idea of what life is all about, cars are a passion to those that know what to do with them, i see you as a person that uses a car to go from point to point where to us the car is the point,, we wash them, we clean the inside, we mod them for road course, we mod the for the drag strip,we take them to shows,some people put them in their garage, some call it a car museum i think you use then (cars to go to buy some stuff) because you do not understand what a car is like to all people.. I have had a totle of three hundered nity seven two seater AMX's also has a few dragsters,, my sports car crossfire is also my dragester,,, so was my 12 second PT Cruiser, call it what you want do with it what you want but don't tell others what to do with their CAR, jim

The SRT is respectable as a drag racing platform. Had production continued perhaps more aftermarket work would have been done there. As it is the Benz crowd provides most of the impetus. Not really a drag car bunch.

Street racing is going to happen if you have a small car with some HP. The number of times a GT mustang, a Ricere'd honda or a little Chevy wants to play at a stoplight has not decreased a bit since I bought my NA. Worse if I'm in the SRT. Both represent themselves with respectful performance.

The SRT has never seen the butt side of a street competitor.

That said, draggin' is not why most of us bought our Crossies. If that's what you are looking to do, buy something else.

I am just amazed to find everyone doing 1/4 miles. I didn't intend any insult, again sorry if it was taken that way. I am hoping to learn as much as fast as I can because I just got to have one. I far as "what I do" you haven't a clue. I didn't come here for a peeing contest I can promise you that.
Now I will return to my garage and complete the installation of my newly serviced fuel injectors. Have a great day.

rip it, don't go away mad. This is just XF passion. These are guys who endlessly debate spark plug heat ranges and wax the inside of their tailpipes. There is a guy on here who details his wheel wells -- the insides -- every summer.

I love the looks and speed of my SRT6, but it will stay stock. I figure it will be worth more (chuckle) someday (prolly not). It's plenty fast as is and is rock solid at 120+ mph, plus it can go over 150 mph.

As far as rust, I always wipe the inside of of the door jams and doors (and hood and trunk) after every wash and I am confident that addresses the problem. That and it rarely sees rain and no longer sees snow/salt.
