Black Beauty going into storage...thoughts?
The time has finally come to put the my black SRT-6 into storage for several years, while I enjoy the flexibility of an SUV-class car that can haul surfboards, bags, friends, and girls. I'm 25 and plan on bringing my lovely Black Beauty out of storage when I own a house with a 2-car garage..and maybe a wife and dog, too. She only has 36k miles, and I'd like to bring that tally up to 250k+ when I start driving her again as a commuter. That being said..
Does anyone have any storage tips??
I plan on disconnecting the battery, filling the tank w/ no-ethanol fuel + stabilizer, propping her up with wooden blocks under all 4 jack locations, and covering her with the Crossfire car cover. The car will be in a warehouse, and I will have comprehensive and liability insurance coverage on her. Any other words of advice/ thoughts to make me change my mind would be most appreciated!
I thought about selling her, but realized that I'd miss her way too much in the future. That supercharge whine just can't be replicated..

A tough decision. I hope the SUV life is worth it.
Along with battery disconnect,,,,,
Drain the crank case,
Drain the cooling systems, both engine and intercooler
I would drain the windshield washer as well.
Purge all with air. Either nitro the tires or plan on replacement when you get some sense
Find a good independent Benz/AMG mechanic who knows the systems, and will likely be alive when you go to fire the beast up again.
They do not like being put to sleep, even for a few winter months, much less years.

Drive it over here and leave it with me.
I promise I'll be kind and gentle, and won't charge you a single penny.
Better yet, drive it to Cumming, GA : I'm sure pizzaguy would love to care for it ...

All, thanks for the comments! I really appreciate the storage tips. So far, I've had to leave the car sitting on base under a car cover for 4 months while I was deployed to the desert..it pained me, but such is the single life without a home garage. Starting it up might be possible every month. I'll have to talk to the warehouse owner in Houston, TX--a 15-hr drive. HOWEVER, I'd much rather leave her with an honest, competent Crossfire owner nearby..
I'm in Charleston, SC, for the next couple years.
Are any of you who posted above within a roughly 5 hour drive?

seriously, we have a forum member who's business is storing cars for servicemen.
The forum still has his user account screwed up, but you can send a PM to his son : cjw

Hmmm... I always thought the wisdom on a long term storeage would be filling the whole engine with fresh oil all the way to the top to prevent corrosion. Completely drain, add fresh oil on start up then drain and refill to normal before driving.
Thanks also for the info about the member who stores cars. I'll certainly hit him up
Just a note from experience (not mine) make sure you think about mice getting into the car and tearing up the interior.
I think poison rather than traps would be the best route but others may have a better suggestion.

I thought the same. I'm going to put the car up for sale on the forum and craigslist to see if there is any immediate interest. If not, she'll go into storage. Black SRT-6, 36500 miles..price? I'm thinking 15,500 would be fair, due to the slight door ding.

As much as it pains me to say it, my SRT-6 will be listed for sale this evening. Be on the lookout for it soon in the For Sale section. It will be priced competitively, and I'd really like to sell it to a fellow forum member who appreciates all the fine details of the car! Thanks for all the helpful comments
I have, but I'd much rather someone who's looking for an SRT-6 have a shot at enjoying the car, rather than let her sit in storage for several years. Who knows, maybe I'll buy another in a different phase of life! Without a doubt, the best price/ power deal on the market. Phenomenal car. Every time I drive her, I don't want to sell her. Have to spend a few hours away from the wheel to make the logical, instead of emotional, decision.
One other caution. My wife left our SRT6 sit for too long before handing it back to me, and when I got into it, the brakes were spongy. Need a flush/re-fill and bleeding. So, not sure if you might have the same issue or not. There were no leaks or bad seals found, it was just a needed maintenance item from sitting too long without any pressurization.
Sounds like you are going to sell it. So I won't add in my .02 for storage just yet. Too bad you aren't closer, as we could look after it for you for sure. Let us know what happens.
I know this is a few months old, however I find myself in the same situation. I'll be leaving this month, deployed. Is anybody in the Northwest Florida region? If not I'll have to store it on base, with squadron members to watch it. A few months ago a SrA totaled someone else's new Genesis. I don't want to leave it with them to say the least.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Codyktt - I'm 4.5 hours north of you ( 252 miles ), I don't have room in my garage, but I'll keep it under a car cover in my outside shed and drive it occasionally if you like.
I am NOT a drag racer or hot rodder, too old for that stuff, but I DO know how to maintain one in show quality condition.
( for a deployed serviceman - no charge )
