65mm EC Clutched Supercharger Pulley VS ASP 178mm kit & PSK178

Hello everyone,

I am going back and forth for my next SRT6 mod:

Should I get a 65mm EC Clutched Supercharger Pulley OR
Should I get an ASP 178mm kit & PSK178?

I can only do one at the moment, so I am looking to do one or the other. I've read some threads and see that there are two schools of thought on this matter and our love some consensus as well as Pros and Cons of each. Can you help me?

Thanks!

I've had both on my car and prefer the 178 crank pulley BUT the installation is a bear/expensive/problematic. The supercharger pulley can be swapped on or off in 15 minutes or less which is a huge plus. The 178 makes more power than the 65mm pulley but it's close enough for some to call it a wash. The 65mm pulley is the easy button. I switched to a 178 with the PSK because my 65mm started rattling like a snake and I knew it would explode sooner than later.

Thanks Les! Great advice.

How about reports of the 65mm causing a jerk/bump at about 10mph? Some say that a 178mm doesn't have that.

No jerks or bumps with mine. I imagine how you drive could expose said jerk. Can't say one way or the other.

Jerks on the road are dangerous less so out of the car.

After 2 failed 65mm pulley's first 1 lasting 2 years started then started to rattle like Velocialbstract and the other lasting literally less than a month with the snout of the pulley literally separating. I went with the 178 from Needswings, in hindsight if I had to do it all over again I would have just done the 178 from the start.

The downside, the SC pulley is much easier to change as with the 178 I had to use an air impact wrench to take mine off, they say you can do it manually with a breaker bar but I gave up on that idea 5 mins into trying. Hit it with my cheap craftmans air impact and this special 28mm impact socket and it came off in 1 min.

Thanks for the great input Philosophico! May I ask if any of the 65mm pulleys that failed were from Eurocharged?

My failed supercharger pulley was an aluminum Code 3 pulley.

The one that lasted only a month was a EC pulley.

EC 65 pulley failed after a month.

First advice is DO NOT get a Eurocharged brand SuperCharger pulley. They have a long history of catastrophic failure. I don't have any personal experience with changing the crank pulley but I do have several years of good experience using the hardened steel 65mm supercharger pulley from "J" in Poland. Look here:

I installed that same steel pulley from Poland about three years ago on my coupe along with latemodel21’s pulley kit and couldn’t be happier.

Anybody have any success with stocking both 65mm top pulley and 178mm bottom pulley?

I had used 65+178 and It made p0108 code.
Now I have 69+178 and it has no problem.

I've done it, once. Stacked was .004 faster in the 1/4 mile than with just the 178. The power fell off a cliff in the upper rpms. Down low it was a monster. I left the 65 on returning from the track. I'd hit huge boost at part throttle with the air fuel ratio in the 14's. At full throttle it leaned out as well. I'm suggesting that unless you are tuned correctly for it, your engine won't last long stacked. If your willing to get the fueling mods needed and have your car tuned on a dyno, stacked, you will love it. It will throw an over boost code from time to time. I believe it's triggered around 22 psi.

Are you hunkered down again for this storm Les ?
I hope it's nothing like the other.

It moved north and missed us. We have some sun and calm winds at the moment. I'm enjoying international wine day all day today.
