IAT's / German Autobahn

Please let me know what you are thinking about the IAT´s. German Autobahn / SLK32 AMG.

"Short" pull :-)

Specs:
2 Pierburg CWA 50 pumps in series
Mesa style oil cooler ( mounted as an "under the car cooler") in additon to the stock (intercooler) heat exchanger.
VW Golf engine coolant reservoir
Separated cooling system

No Supercooler.

Re: IAT´s / German Autobahn

After reading dozents of threads about IAT´s here on CrossfireForum.org and MBWorld.org Forum (E55 section) i came to the following conclusions:

Cooling mods for the SRT6/C32/SLK32 regarding lower IATs.

1. separate cooling system
2. reservoir
3. low pressure high volume pump or pumps (i.e. 2x CWA 50, 1 CWA 100)
4. At least 5 liters coolant fluid in the separated system
5. additional transmission cooler (under the car cooler) to the existing AMG radiator ie. Mesa style https://www.wolfgangint.com/store/pr...olers-1117024/

You don´t need a Supercooler IMO. The Supercooler is the perfect "heat sucker" especially in lower speed traffic conditions, a big piece of heat sucking aluminium full of water behind the grill in the heart of the heat -> the engine bay. It even blocks the airflow through the condensor and engine radiator and both are heating the supercooler and vice versa. No good. Where does the heat go? Doesn´t make too much sense to me. We have a fully packed small engine bay and the heat doesn´t exit very good.

With an "under the car" style cooler and some additional fluid you will be fine. The water in the reservoir never gets hot, not even really warm! I was wondering myself, but the system doesn´t heat soak ! Perfect for me. BTW i use the smaller 72 plate cooler. Fine for me. But there is a bigger 96 plate cooler.

These small Mesa stlyle transmission oil coolers are very efficient. Don`t be too much concerned about the size of these babies: they are successfully used on high peformance VW aircooled engines. Talking about 200-250 hp engines - oil/aircooled, no water, just a single transmission oil cooler and fan on these engines. Again: this small cooler cools a single hot performance VW aircooled engine alone, not just an intercooler!

Very important. You need the water to be flowed. The heat doesn`t have to stay long in the intercooler.
I use 2 x Pierburg CWA50 waterpumps in series. These pumps flow like hell on low pressure and are almost undestructable. I can get them used for 30-40 dollars here in Germany. They are used on different Audi, BMW and VW engines.

Reservoir. I use a VW Golf reservoir. It has an overflow tube on top of the reservoir which helps to purge the airbubbles out of the system very fast and it has a single tube down low which fits perfect to the "T". It´s almost plug n play. Disconnect and plug to the reservoir

The recovery time after WOT is very fast.-> Video: WOT to about 170mph and IAT´s back to 30° over ambient after a couple of seconds. :-)

In slower traffic 10-°15F over ambient.

I have 5 Liters of coolant in the separated system. Distilled Water and 5% Motul MoCool.

Pumps are running everytime (ignition on) but i would recommend a power switch for the second pump. No need of 2 pumps when not speeding.

The system is easy to fit. one pump on each side of the car (see pics).

Costs: aprx. $200 for the whole system including the pumps.

The "mesa" cooler under the car is a new concept. Nice work.
I have two fans on a relay behind the forward heat exchanger that keeps air flowing when stopped at red lights or caught in traffic. They are turned off when the car is moving. I noticed your outside air was 56F. That is a cold day here.

Yes, it was the first cold morning after a hot summer here in Germany. That was a 30 seconds WOT pull. Afterwards the car was in "speed mode" for another 15 minutes countryside. "Cold air fun". When arriving at home the water in the reservoir was still cold, not warm like a cold coffee. Not heat soaked like me :-)

Yes, I saw how fast the temps went down on the video. I was wondering about heat soak after an extended time. What you said "arriving at home the water in the reservoir was still cold" is really impressive. Thank you for posting and I will be looking for a Pierburg CWA 50 pump.

I'm impressed! I have a huge heat exchanger, stock I/C pump, baked potato modded intercooler and my IAT's reach 175º at around 160 mph. They cool under braking to 135º. They sit around 130 just driving around. To be honest, I've considered mounting a cooler under the car but worry about the clearance. Time to revisit the possibility of an under the car cooler. Thanks for posting and providing pictures of the placement.

Trust me, you will be amazed. Like me. I checked the system a couple of times, because it´s new on my car (since last friday) and I want to know if it is efficient enough or not. To be honest, I was driving like a mad man yesterday morning after the Autobahn run. When I arrived home, I opened the reservoir and put my finger into the water my first thought was: "damned something is wrong, the water cannot be that cold" But everything ok. :-)

Les,

i have written all of your threads concerning the IAT´s. You live in the tropics, right? You may need a second cooler under the car or the bigger 96 plate cooler. BTW a nice placement for a second cooler would the area around the fuel pump and regulator.

After thinking a while: two coolers in addition to the stock cooler are probabely overkill, even in hot climate. I would try one size bigger cooler first in series with the AMG radiator. Please note: I have the cats right behind the mesa cooler. Without cats you can mount even 2 Mesa coolers in the front position if needed.

Mesa, or EMPI Transmission Coolers are identical. Biggest size available:

Hi,
i would recommend the CWA100 as a single pump. About the same price, but significally more flow than the CWA50 (but less than 2 x CWA50 in series). VRP sells the CWA100 with connector.

I ve seen on youtube video and coment to you, at same ambient temps 2xstock coolers with -10 c mode works like your setup, now i try cl55 heat exchanger in addion to stock, in 30 c iats rise to 50 and drops to 45 at 220 km/h i need more colder temps to give you full result , ps ive never split cooling and never use 2x pump, only 010

I think IAT's can't be much better for me in conjunction with the stock chargecooler without going too much crazy on additional mods (meth/water injection, killer chiller, ice tank,). I've done the split mainly to reduce stress on the chargecooler and to have a lower temperature starting point. The intercooler is known to fail on a pressureized system - sooner or later even with the stock pump. I'm done with the cooling mods. Please proove me
wrong :-)

Re: IAT's / German Autobahn

I run the CWA 100 pump in c32amg with split cooling and bmw power steering reservoir and I get at 1/4 mile track
10c ambient 20c before burn out then goes up to 60c at the end of my 12.50@ 111.32moh with a 65mm. Looking at your iat seem better, I have speed driven IC
which is single pass

What pulley u run seeing 30psi
that cooler let’s u run 5/8 lines I take it?

Re: IAT's / German Autobahn

Hi,
19mm (inner dia) or 3/4"
Its total boost pressure. You have to substract atmosoheric pressure (14.7 PSI)
65mm pulley.

Re: IAT's / German Autobahn

U have stock IC ?
i think your iat temps are awesome it only went up by 70f on a 20-30 sec wot pull. I have never tried that can’t in Canada but like my other post said a 12-14 sec wot run for me and I hit 90f increase from starting

Thanks, yes, stock intercooler.
It can get even better with the stock intercooler.
There is a German guy with a Mercedes W210/E55 Kompressor Swap. 6O0+ hp. You will find him on YouTube. He runs 2x CWA100 pumps and 3 Mercedes radiators in series and has about same temps than me but 50 percent more power/heat. Remember the 55 chargecooler core is about same size as the SRT6. The core not the chargecooler itself. Those CWA100 pumps are the main reason for lower temps and radiator location of course.

Re: IAT's / German Autobahn

Just to say my temps that I dataloged at track was being hot lapped and the ambient 10c and end of 1/4mile 60c was second pass in a row, I forgot to data log 1st pass. I think the speed driven Intercooler doesn’t cool as much cause of single pass design compared to stock IC with duel pass design.
nice work and I would love to blast down auto bond.
anyone know when car pulls timing what temps does it start at I have heard 35c, 65c, 85c. Don’t know if that is right.

Re: IAT's / German Autobahn

No2fast I'm thinking the CWA100 may have too much pressure for the SRT6 system and the CWA100 draws twice as much amps as the smaller CWA50. I will add a VW reservoir just as you have done, but do not want to add another heat exchanger. Taking that in to consideration I prefer the CWA50 as the SRT6 wiring to the OEM Bosch pump is 18 gauge.
How did you wire the pumps you are using? Did you run larger wire? Do your CWA50 pumps have three or four pins. There is no PWM available at the Bosch OEM pump only a ground and the 12v DC, how did you deal with that?

Re: IAT's / German Autobahn

Hi,

I don´t think the CWA100 is too big. It´s a low pressure pump with maximum flow. There is not too much pressure. Volume is the key word. Pump is used on E55 AMG`s. Same scenario here, but i wouldn´t use it with the stock radiator alone.. I like the idea of two CWA50 pumps better, because one can push and the other can suck through the radiators giving perfect conditions with minimal pump losses. The Audi CWA 50 pump has only 2 wires like the stock SRT6 pump. Almost plug n play, no big wires. I did cut the stock wires and did use the Audi pigtail.
One pump was wired to the stock location and the other to the fuse box using "add a fuse" ( heat seater terminal. 12v ignition).

Re: IAT's / German Autobahn

I just bought the audi pump 8K0965567 which is the CWA50 off a used car on ebay for $120. I have the wiring figured out as there is a great thread on the MB World forum with all the info. Thanks for your help. I also have the four prong connecter coming from FCPEuro if I need it.
Thing is the CWA100 draws twice the amps and that is what really had me concerned.
