McQuire's offers a clay bar kit. It includes a 'liquid' clay wash that is VERY effective in removing contaminates - you can feel the stuff working as you use it as a first wash. Also included is a clay bar 'lubricant' and two 50-gram bars of clay. Costs about fifteen bucks.

For the first-timer, a great kit. A great kit for regular user before the polish and wax applications.

I also use Meguiar's Clay Bar kit. Easy to use and REALLY works to get the crud off of the clearcoat.
Here's a FAQ on the clay bar meguiars.com: FAQ - Detailing Clay

Hey Mike. Beat ya to it!

Same here - it comes as a kit with everything you'll need. It's a snap to use & the results are noticable. Just follow the instructions & you'll be good to go!
Can't ask for more !

That's correct - don't let all of these testimonials for Meguiar's dissuade you, including mine at the top. A lot of manufacturers make make clay bars and lubricants, and they all work just as well. The thing I like about Meguiar's is the 'liquid' clay wash. It's a really easy, aggressive first step for an older car.

Meguiar's is very good stuff, but for occasional maintenance of your paint finish, any 'ol clay bar will do the job. Shop for the dollars.

What is this "liquid clay wash" you speak of? We have no such animal.

As for clay, here's the real deal: there is only one source of clay in all the world. Meguiar's and all of our competition contracts these guys to make it for us, and we can all request specific colors, levels of aggressiveness, etc. But it all comes from the same place. It's not really an industry secret so I'm not putting my job in jeopardy or anything..... but that's the truth.

Yes, Mother's, Zaino, Clay Magic and others.... they're all good and will all do an excellent job for you. Price wise they're all pretty close too. Honestly, I'd rather see you use someone else's clay than not do it all.

I stand corrected. I've got so much Mcguiar's stuff in the garage that I had a senior moment brain fart when I was posting above. Had to go down and find the right poduct. Sorry, guys. My apologies.

In any event, the kit that I'm talking about is by Turtle Wax. The call it the ICE Clay Kit includes a 100 gram bar of clay, 16 oz. spray lubricant AND a 16 oz. bottle of what they call 'ICE Liquid Clay'. This is the stuff that works magic IMHO.

Directions call for it to be used as an initial 'wash' with a soaked terry cloth swab or mitt. It almost feels like a rubbing compound as you smear it around in sections. You can FEEL the stuff working to take off a layer of contaminant, especially on the horizontal surfaces of an older vehicle. You can feel it 'grab' and then go 'slick' as it takes off the crud. After this application, rinse, go ahead with the clay bar as usual. Makes the clay barring go easy. Polish. Wax.

Works great. Highly recommended.

Sorry about the confusion, but give the ICE Liquid Clay a try. You'll love it.

I detail cars on the side for therapy (and get from doing house chores) and used both Meguires and Mothers. They both are great Clay bars, I just like the Meguires products and use them in all in my detailing. If yall can find it, Meguires has a "professional" grade of their auto store cleaners and waxes. They are called about the same name, but have different labels and in tan bottles. Seems to be a higher grade product and get better results (for me). Costs a Little more, but hey! They worth it! :-) I found mine in a professional auto paint store where body shops get their supplies.

Started the wax project last night and the claybar worked amazing. I couldn't believe the surface had as much dirt and crap as it did . After finishing the hood it was so slick a fly would fall and bust his a$$ .

zaino clay bar and use zaino car wash and distilled water for the lubricant. keeping the bar wet and slick is the key to a good clay bar detail

Exactly what I use and how I use it 32krazy. I don't use any lube other than a spray bottle of distilled water. I've never had a problem with the clay bar sticking.

Great information here, but now that I know what to look for I'm finding all sorts of little things. Found what looks like buffer burn on the roof seam above the passenger door. Also as you can see, some pretty serious water spotting. I'm going to try and hand polish it out, but I may end up looking for someone to do this who knows how.

Hood after clay. Should look better after the wax goes on and buffed.

buff or polish BEFORE waxing! also try some poor boys black hole in between polish and wax. i would also advise applying black hole and wax by hand. polishers in the hands of the inexperienced will leave swirl marks
