Cleaning exhaust tips
I cleaned my exhaust tips for the first time since I got her at the end of September(I know, I'm a terrible person). Used some simple green(which has the pleasant aroma of Jager), steel wool, and NEVR-DULL. Did not see as drastic of results as I had hope on the inside of the tips, but they look 100% better from a distance(which is good enough for me because I'm probably the only one who will stare at them from 2feet away).

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
I got tired of cleaning the inside of them so I painted them black. Now I only have to clean the edges.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
The insides of mine are black too, but I didn't have to paint them lol. I'm not sure that I will be able to get them clean.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
I think it makes a big difference having them cleaned and polished like this. Looks good.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
As my tips are not chrome and were very mistreated abrasive is exactly what I was looking for. No amount of polish, cleaner, or any kind of cloth was going to remove the soot.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
Am I the only one on this forum that credits Top Tier gasoline for my clean tips?

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
So in short,
With what should I clean my tips with? I somewhat find it nice having the tips dirty and just the edges clean... |
Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
I used Seapower Fiberglass Boat Cleaner and Wax applied to one of the small round Mothers polishing balls chucked in my power drill. It cleans, polishes and applies a coat af wax. I have not had to clean the tips in several months. What little was there the last time came out easily with a paper towel dampened with 409 and vinegar.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
The real key to this, like anything else, is to stay on top of it. A minute of preventive maintenance every time you wash your car is a whole lot easier, and keeps things looking better longer, than doing a major correction after you've let it go to heck in handbasket. Any decent metal polish will do - Meguiar's, Mother's, NevrDull, etc. You shouldn't need a tool like the Mother's Power Ball or Meguiar's DynaCone if you keep up with it.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
Amen, Mike-In-Orange. If the owner before me had taken care of the tips and if I had kept up with them I would have had no problems. It's always much easier to prevent than to correct.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
Once I get the magnaflow there will be plenty of prevention ;)
|
Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
The Magnaflow exhaust is so easy to take care of. I use a little Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum Polish on them with a clean, old terry towel and they come up great. If I'm doing a full on hard core detail on the car I grab the wool pad that comes with our Headlight Restoration Kit and spin that on a drill to give them maximum pop.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
Our tips are stainless steel with a polished lip and exterior. Don't believe me? Try to drill a weep hole in it like I did. And you can use 0000 steel wool on it, It won't scratch it. I'd bet 00 won't either.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
I kept my tips on my Roadster Limited clean from day one. When I purchased the XLR the tips had a little build up on the inside and I used a little bit of Easy Off oven cleaner and they are like brand new.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
I've always used the Nevr-Dull wadding polish on chrome or SS exhaust tips. Product has always worked at removing surface contaminants and leaves a great looking shine. Probably do this 2-3x a year.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
I always use turtle chrome cleaner for years now !!! Remember when cars had real chrome bumpers ????

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
I picked my SRT-6 up a week ago. 17,500 miles of accumulated carbon on the exhaust tips. They were black. Twenty minutes with an SOS pad got rid of all the carbon. Thank God they're stainless and not chrome. I'm thinking some Meguiar's NXT 2.0 synthetic polymer wax may stand up to the heat and make cleaning easier in the future.

Re: Cleaning exhaust tips
Don't worry everyone, I have just solved my problem with dirty stock exhaust forever...MagnaFlow was installed on Thursday ;)
