car shakes when ignition turned off...

Anybody have this problem?

I've only had my car for 2 weeks now but when I turn off the ignition it sounds like something shakes in the left side of the engine bay.

I haven't had any such problem, nor heard of it from anyone else. Let us know when you find the problem.

I think it is normal. mine shakes a bit. so do corvettes and other rwd sports cars.

mine makes a rattle when you turn it off, but hold the clutch in when you turn the key off and the rattle is gone. same thing happens with my dads vette.

Have the hood open and watch the engine movement while someone else shuts it off. Engine moves against motor mounts. Could be one or more of the rubber bushings in the mounts that dampen the noise and vibration are squished a bit more so it rattles at tad at various times. An engine torque dampener would alleviate it if they made such a thing for the Xfire... Generally they make torque dampeners for 4 cylinder engines... SRT-4 and other compacts...

Mine shakes too, nothing to worry about though. Sometimes it rattles too, but that's just the exhaust, and all the rubber mounts moving around due to vibration.

You could always make your own Torque dampeners, not too hard to do.

Mine shakes like it has just run out of gas when I turn the ign off. But the other's I test drove, all 6-speed, also shook.

I experience the exact same thing when the car is turned off in neutral. If the car is turned off in gear, however, there is no rattling noise.

I have the same thing every couple of times. Kinda sounds like the exhaust is knocking around when the engine shakes.

well that's interesting, then maybe its the clutch?

Just To Touch Up On The Subject...

Yes The Rattling Does Stop When You Hold The Clutch In...

When You Turn It Off Without Holding Down The Clutch It's Very Noticeable And Aggravating...

Don't Know If This Is Something That Can Be Fixed But If It Is...

Now's The Time Cause I'm At 32,000...

Other Than That...

Love The Car!!!

Good luck convincing Chrysler Techs to even acknowledge the noise.

After numerous visits, I actually went down to the dealership during work hours ones day to show them the noise. After turning the car off with the service manager sitting next to me and having the noise occur very loudly, he commented to me that he did not hear anything.

Even with me sitting right next to him and hearing the noise quite loudly, he still claimed he couldn't hear a thing! Needless to say I completely blew up and haven't been back to that dealership since. So far I'm 0 for 2 at service depts. at Chrysler dealerships. There is one more in my area, so I'm crossing my fingers.

lol '...what noise?!'

I'm going to see what they have to say when I bring it in for my first oil change.

Hi All,

Just new here, I have also the noise when the ignition is turned off... did any one have any luck with what was the cause ? Or if there is a fix from Chrysler as my warranty is up in september, can this be fixed by the dealer ?

Re: car shakes when ignition turned off...

If it's repeatable, have a friend stand near the noise origination area with the hood up (head in engine bay, ear triad downward), turn off the car, presumably without the clutch pedal down, in neutral. Check for where it emanates from. Look for shrouds that cover the exhaust pipe (heat shields) that may be a bit loose and rattle a bit against some other metal. Have your friend watch the general engine movement and vibration (with clutch in and out to see if there's a difference). Without a load, engine shouldn't vibrate as much. Also see if the engine moves "sideways" or "front-to-back" when shutting off. Will help further determine what part might be rubbing. Also have your friend put his/her head underneath (near front tire) if it seems to be coming from underneath rather than on-top... Good luck... PS - record the sound and take it to Chrysler techs if you have a PDA or some other recording device.

I think you will find that the effect you are describing is known as pre ignition here in the uk.

At least thats what it sounds like to me.

It's when the plugs are getting too hot, see here http://www.ngkntk.co.uk/technicaltips/preignition.asp

Hope this helps.

Re: car shakes when ignition turned off...

It's the clutch plates rattling. Hold in the clutch when you turn the car off and the noise will go away. There's nothing wrong with the car, it's just the nature of the beast.

Re: car shakes when ignition turned off...

Pre-ignition/ knock! What octane are you using? Surely the clutch would not be engaged after the engine has been turned off, and you are in Park/neutral.
