I'd think about the new Pentastar V6 which puts out 305hp in the new Challenger.

The 3.3ltr (pushrod v6 similar to the 3.5) actually has a little racing pedigree to it being massaged by no other than Shelby for the failed Shelby Can Am Racing Series of '89.

The Shelby Dodge Can-Am race car, with the Shelby race version of the Chrysler 3.3L V6 engine

I had another van I had put a subaru in and the gearing is way too low and it pissed me off, so I started looking for a 6 cyl I could set midengined. the vw trans isnt durable above 180 hp. I chose the 94 vision because I knew the electronics would be a challenge, and I wanted to learn on an obd1 system before moving into the late nineties. besides, I have bought both vehicles and set the e/t for less than 3k, total.
So, buying a 12k engine with obd2 immobilizers and stuff makes little sense for me. true, this engine has 160k miles on it, it ran beautifully before I dismantled her. she must pass smog again too. my ref has no suprises for me.

march 2012-- I have been back to fullerton college since-- their auto shop is now north in la habra due to construction-- but the $8.25 fee is only for those throwing the dice with a conversion or swap. ahem!

CORRECTION-- the state guys will inspect for free, but you must have a legitimate issue to get them to smog it--a sort of incentive-- not just anyone can go for cheap-

I also own a prowler, had it since new...

the 3.5 is a nice enough engine, has plenty of power for the weight of the prowler, which is even lighter weight 2,838 lb. than the crossfire.

The stock engine:
* High-output 3.5L V6
* 24-valve SOHC aluminum block
* Sequental multipoint electronic fuel injection
* 60 degree OHC
* 253 horsepower at 6,400 rpms
* 255 pound-feet of torque at 3,950 rpms

Since 'new' I've changed out the muffler to a 'free-flow' prowler-owner-designed one... changed the rear end gears, and did a high-flow K&N air filter install. It moves along nicely, but NOwhere near the SRT6.

JMO.

I know this thread's a bit old... a few months ... but still it's active, so thought I'd throw in my 2c if it helps.

Why hasn't people asked about using the 3.7 L Mercedes engine which is the same as our engine expcept bored out? This engine would be a bolt in swap and the stock ECU would probalbly adapt and run this engine with no modifications or tuning

I have a 2010 Challenger with the 3.5 with less than 1000 miles on it. It has I think more horses than the 3 318cid 70's Chargers and 76 Roadrunner that I have owned. The acceleration seems better too and I get 19 - 20 mpg in town which is almost as good as the hwy mileage in the old chargers.

this is why I am dipping my toes in this direction. I like the innovation at chrysler. My girlfriend had a prowler and it drove very nice, although it rode like a tbucket roadster in the front. what innovation...aluminum frame and all--truly a dream-drawing board car. the pentastar is pretty amazing, and that mbz is using a variation of it speaks volumes. thank god chrysler never made a suburban.

The 3.5 v6 that came in the late 90's LHS cars are TOUGH motors. Easy to find, full motors can be had for $450. It wouldn't take much to churn out 300+ whp all motor on pump gas. But stand alone management would be a must. I say go for it! X-fire would actually be a chrysler

I have had a few 3.5's. I had an '01 300M and it was pretty quick for the car. We had an '05 Pacifica and it was a dog (heavy car). However, I will keep the 3.2 Merc in my XF's.

I started cutting the harnass today. removed the keyless remote

the collision sensors and the front abs wheel sensors. the 3rd black body module plug had most of the alarm wires, which will not be needed with the new base modules. todd

Shameless plug but if you need a good motor and 42LE transmission i have a 97 LHS i bought for a parts car. Motor had 60k on it and ran great last time i started it about a year ago.

On a side note since your doing what i never had the chance... I'll give you some tips. the 2nd generation 99+ 3.5's used bigger throttlebodies and a better flowing intake manifold. They used a higher lift cams. From what i have been told its possible to use the rods from the older 3.8's to increase the stroke from 81mm to 86.9mm if you wanted to make a 3.8 stroker. Altho i think the first generation used free floating pistons.

Why not Mustang's new V-6 with 300 horsepower? Or if you are loaded, lay your hands on one of VW's W12 engines, many horses. Look it up.

Or he could use a 3.5 motor that is commonly availble in Junkyards as he said. But then it is pretty easy to sit in front of a keyboard and make farfetched prohibitively expensive suggestions:mad: It is EVEN EASIER if you yourself have never done an engine swap:p

I am very satisfied with my present choice. It has taken a lot to get to this point, with the research and all.
does ford have a transaxle yet? matched? this is a smoggable app/ california.
they require a matched engine and transaxle. no mixing. not anymore. this is a kit I will mass produce next year. I need an executive order from california for it to be approved and marketable. I liked the windstar engine, but no t/axle. I didnt want some lump in the middle of my cargo floor. this tucks under the seat nicely. a sedan configured induction design is lower than a vans. so that was limiting too.
I needed 200-300 hp to make this worth doing. It will evolve.
