Hood Liner + Soundproofing Install

4 Attachment(s)
I have an '07 Base Coupe, which does not come with a hood liner. So, I ordered the hoodliner from Chrysler Parts Direct, and when it came, I was pretty disappointed. The hoodliner consists of a very thin sandwich of foam with foil in the middle to reflect heat. At the thickest, the hoodliner is probably 3/16", most places it's probably about 80 mil.

I was expecting some kind of mass loading/soundproofing to be part of the hoodliner. So I decided to install my own soundproofing underneath the hoodliner.

Why Acoustic Foam:
So after looking at the typical overpriced options (dynamat, etc) I went straight to McMaster and got some 1" thick, adhesive-backed acoustic polyurethane foam. This stuff is rated to 200 degrees fahrenheit and more importantly has a 0.75 NRC rating.

Dynamat extreme, by comparison, has a 0.25 NRC rating. A 1.0 NRC rating is the maximum.

The foam is McMaster part # 5692T49 - Adhesive Backed "Skinned" 1" thick Polyurethane foam.

How much Foam:
It cost $12/foot for a 54" wide sheet. I bought 4 feet and I had some left over. I think you could probably get away with 3 feet to save money.

Cutting the Foam:
Cutting the foam to fit the voids in the hood is not easy, but the easiest method I found was to use aluminum foil. Take a large sheet of aluminum foil and put it over the void to fill in the hood. Then using your fingers, gently rub the foil around the edges of the void and an impression of the void will be formed on the foil. Take the foil and place on the acoustic foam. Punch holes with a screwdriver around the perimeter of the edges of the void on the foil. Using a fat-tip permanent marker, mark the acoustic foam through the holes you just punched. Remove the foil and cut around the pattern marked on the foam.

Hood Rivets:

I used McMaster part #90221A121, black nylon, 0.75" diameter heads, ribbed-shank rivets. They fit, but I had to trim some of the plastic rivets to a shorter length because the depth behind the blind holes on the hood are not consistent. Trimming was done using a sheet-metal tin snip. These rivets are high-strength nylon and .281" in diameter - not weak at all.

I was considering using expanding rivets, but these seem to hold just fine. If you can find rivets with 1" diameter heads, they would work much better.

Results aka Does It Work:

Valve noise is no longer audible when standing outside of the car. You can hear the engine, but the high pitched noises are completely gone.

The faint high-pitched ringing of the emissions air pump is no longer audible inside/outside the car.

The engine is no longer audible at speeds over 40mph. At over 40mph, I actually can't hear the engine revving over the tire noise. It's really weird to rev-match on a downshift, see the tach needle climb, but not actually hear the engine rev.

The exhaust sounds better. This might sound weird, but because there's no engine noise anymore, the exhaust is louder and there's more bass to it. This is even the case standing outside the car. Before the soundproofing install, I couldn't hear the exhaust standing outside of the car at idle. After the soundproofing install, I can hear the exhaust rumbling standing outside of the car at idle.

All other noises in the car seem to be louder when sitting at a stop light. The stereo seems louder. All the weird little low-pitched clunks and clanks from the radiator fan and emissions components are louder.

Total Cost:
$72.00 Hood Liner + $13 shipping
$9.77 for 25 plastic rivets (Used seven)
$48.00 for 4 feet acoustic foam + $10.00 shipping
=$152.77

ORIGINAL POST BELOW
----------------------------------------------

I looked at a couple of posts and people had listed the Rivets and Hood Liner separately. When it came time to order my Hood Liner, I went to ChryslerPartsDirect and they did not list the rivets as a separate part. I even tried the supposed part #: 6104900AB. No such thing apparently.

So I received my hood liner today and it looks ok, except for a crease down the middle where they folded the damn thing (grrr.)

In any case, does anyone know where to get these hood liner rivets from? Is there something else I can order from McMaster? I mean, I expected a LOT more from the hoodliner for the $80 I paid for it, and I don't feel like getting ripped off for a couple of plastic/rubber buttons.

Thanks.

Can't you use your old ones or are they gone? Are they strictly made to fit a Crossfire or will a regular Chrysler one do the trick?

I own a base coupe so it didn't originally come with a hoodliner, so no luck there.

Not sure about the other Chrysler parts, but I doubt anyone at my local dealership has any idea.

I just measured the holes on the hood - 0.275-0.298" ID, with a maximum depth of 0.690".

Looks like I'll be buying from McMaster.

Thanks irwin, no I'm not sure if they are just push-in clips or if they are rivets, that's why I was asking, I guess.

Well, I bought a pack of 25 push-in clips from McMaster at 0.281" hole size. So I will let you guys know what happens.

Thanks.

The correct plugs will be available from any auto body supply house, not in a typical auto zone or pep boys.

thanks parawxman. I don't have access to an auto body supply house, so hopefully these mcmaster clips will do.

Did the same thing to my base. But I bought thr insulation from my dealer he gave me a good price. He also tokd me that it did not come with the rivits. I would need 13 for the job at $ 1.00 each. Which he then ordered. They are a Mopar part.

Re: Hood Liner Rivets Didn't Come with Hood Liner - where to get?

I pulled the hood liner out for the cooling benefits for the engine and supercharger. Also aids cooling with the car off or in our nations capitol traffic. I turn the radio down to hear engine and even pulled the muffler to improve the sound during autocrossing. 4 cats and a resonator are enough and the motor breathes better with the needswing intake also as the supercharger is also audible now. With the power this makes I wanna hear it as long as it does not drone like my 73 440 six-pack challenger.

Different strokes for different.........I guess.
