Oil Consumption In Test Cars
Later,
I am not surprised to see this. I have 5-40 Royal Purple in my Xf now and since I don't run it in winter will think about 10-40 next change It just seems logical that ultra light oil would seep through areas that heavier oil would not.
I know some people I've talked to that have VW 2.0T engines started using a slightly heavier oil because the turbo would slowly leak/burn oil.
I must be lucky, then. I change oil yearly, or at 7000 whichever comes first and have never had to add any extra Mobil1 0-40.
I'm now at 53,000 miles.

I think any oil consumption is bad...is there a recommended oil that is thicker than the 0-40 that is standard? This could explain why some of us have sooty exhaust?
Engines with close fits need thinner oil especially at start up. Put in some really thick oil and get to meet your pistons for the first (and last) time ... you'll find them welded to the bores.
You said a thicker oil so I thought you meant over the 40 weight. When cars burnt oil in the old days they went to oil that was like molasses when cold. It made the wear faster but there was less blue smoke to show the buyer.
