Default Wrong oil put in - advice please

Hi all,

I have just picked up the xfire from my local garage who I have dealt with for years, and they have put the wrong oil in!!!

They put in 5w 40 instead of 0w 40. This even though I had a long conversation with them when I booked it in about it needing 0w 40 ( mechanic didn't believe me and insisted on checking in his workshop book "oh yes you are right it does need 0w 40") that's right I'm a girl what would I know!

When I got home & looked at the receipt & realised they had put wrong oil in I phoned, they said they thought it was 0w 40 but the motor factors Said it was 5w 40 so they went with that!

The garage are saying it won't do any harm & I can drive it, I have said it needs to be drained & the right oil put in.

What I was wondering is will it damage the engine and what is the difference between 5w & 0w oil?

Obviously I will be insisting they put the oil the manual (and I) specified in but do I need a new oil filter as well?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If I'm not mistaken, some of the members here run 5w-40 as an alternative, I also have seen it posted as OK in a Mercedes publication as acceptable as long as it Meets Mercedes specs. Other may know more.

I'd ask for a certificate for a free change in the future, and call it quits. Might lose .01% cold economy, not sure.

Nothing to worry about! Love the suggestion of a free oil change. After all, they messed up and that's just good business

I run either Mobile 1 5W50 or Castrol Edge 5W40 - both are on the 229.3 approval list.
0W40 is just too thin for my liking, here in Georgia's heat.

If you take the car to an MB or Chrysler dealer, by default, it will get 5W40 - that is the current recommendation from MB.

BUT they did not do what you told them to do - so the free oil change sounds right to me!

Always put a new filter in when you change the oil.
What brand of oil was it? Seems everyone is thinking it is a Mobil 1 synthetic oil, but is it?

We can't emphasize enough pizzaguy's feedback above. If they used any name brand synthetic motor oil in the 0w-40w or 5w-40w (even a 5w-50w) grade level, your engine should be fine.

I gotta remember that suggestion for free work whenever a shop doesn't follow my direction or instructions.

Later,

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I'm not sure what brand of oil it was I will ask but looks like I can stop panicking!

Still not happy tho because I specifically said 0w 40.

You should at least insist on a free oil change certificate for the next time ......

5w40 is diesel engine oil and completely different additives, are you sure they put in Mobil 1 synthetic or regular 5w40 that is made for cast iron and not the delicate mb aluminum?
I always buy my own oil and filter and have it in the car when I take it in to get oil changed so there is no descrepencies and it is cheaper.

The ONE TIME I brought my own oil and filter with me, the place didn't replace the o-rings on the canister.

So, I always do it myself. But taking the stuff with you is a good way to insure what is going in the engine, that is for sure.

You know, I'll bet they used a PAPER FILTER as well......................
