Transmission Level Before Driving
 

Ok.....I don't mean to upset anyone by not doing an exhaustive search but I need a simple question answered without spending all day looking for it.

Here it is. Using the dipstick "tool" and the engine not warmed up to operating temperature, where should the fluid level be on the dipstick ?

I want to believe that it should be between the first set of marks on the dipstick tool. Am I wrong ? If so then what ? Thanks in advance.

Why would you not want to check it at operating temperature? That is the most important time the level needs to be correct.

Isn't it just as important to check the level "cold" before starting out to warm the engine up ? I will be changing out the filter and transmission connector due to a leak that has developed. Since I have already "leaked" transmission fluid I will not be getting an accurate reading from the drain pan of the fluid I need to replace.


Hence............I would like to know how to check the level prior to driving.

Capturing all the fluid you drain during the service will give you a good indication of how much to refill for a starting point. A lot of plastic buckets have graduated measuring lines for fluid amounts.

I am replacing the connector this evening. Not enough miles yet to change the fluid. I am just using the "in the middle" mark.

Doc, if you jack it up from the passenger side, only about a teaspoon of fluid will be lost.

Well, I didn't see your post. I had it level on stands already...maybe lost a little more than that...lol. It was an easy fix. Went right in. Pump went in easy...and in fact, the whole job went way too easy. Old and slow....makes it easy I guess....
