Auto dimming rearview mirror
Auto dimming rearview mirror
I have just bought a new crossfire coupe and traded in my 2 year coupe, and have found that the auto dimming mirror is not fitted. Just a mirror!
So i have been back to the dealership and they tell me that my chassis number does not have one fitted.
Also because of this the wiring harness is also different and we the dealer cannot fit one and chrysler wont give you one.
I have produced the chrysler advertising literature, the current spec off Chryslers UK website. The spec for the actual coupe that i purchased and the wiring and fitting instructions from the Chrysler crossfire workshop manual that says it is standard fit.
Still no joy anyone got any ideas.

Re: Auto dimming rearview mirror
Rob,
I picked up my new Crossfire last Saturday and asked exactly the same question after reading it in the literature that it had an auto dimming rear view mirror, the dealer looked at me blankly as though it had never been a feature. I told him it's mentioned in the brochure...
Obviously they need to update their brochures judging by some of the replies to this.
I've done 300 miles since the weekend and am loving every minute of this car and the drive!

i have been into the dealer this morning and again explaining what i wanted. he took copies of all my evidence (advertising literature and website stuff).
he told me, chrysler had told him that the early ones were USA spec and the new ones british spec and the advertised mirror means the manual one fitted with no electrical because it is not in the wired harness.
i then showed him the page about powered mirrors and wiring from the workshop manual (that's a handy download) and he said he would try again with chrysler. faxing the stuff i had given him.
i took the interior light fitting out last night and the harness is NOT wired for a mirror.
i will wait and see, keeping you all informed.
gentex offers auto dimming mirrors $80 us dollars.

Re: Auto dimming rearview mirror
Rob265, I'm not an electrician or mechanic, but couldn't you simply "hot wire" the mirror to your fuse box. I mean, isn't the mirrors "dimming mechanism" self contained, and all you really need is a power source?
I have an '04, and I've got to say, there are times that the automatic dimming feature is more of a bother than a blessing, for instance. When I can't make out if that car closing in on me real fast has a light bar on it or not. It keeps me in a constant state of paranoia when ever I'm traveling a little over the speed limit after dark, and I can't tell whose behind me.

Re: Auto dimming rearview mirror
hi fireamx,
well yes i worked as an auto electrician that is my trade.
yes i can wire a mirror, it needs an ignition feed and earth, and also lockout wire from the gearbox when you select reverse so that you can see behind when reversing. simple to wire just down the side window pillar into the fusebox. that's what i will have to do if i don't get anywhere with it.
the point i am trying to make with the dealer is if it is advertised as being fitted then i want it. and since when do we take features out of a model, i thought we strive to improve things.
as for if the auto dim feature is good or bad i don't want to get into, each to his own, but for me i had a bog standard ford escort diesel for 14 years with a standard mirror. now in march '04 i got my first crossfire coupe (metallic grey) loved it as soon as i saw it. loved it even more when i drove it, and just sat for hours drinking coffee an just lookin at it (no i'm not sad).
well i sort of got used to the dimming mirror as i drove 75% at night so i miss this feature in my new '06 coupe (machine grey) which i have had for 1 month.

Hi Rob, I didn't mean to sound like I was trying to talk ya out of it, after all, you did say that you had an '04 that you must have been pleased with or why else would you miss it on your new one.
As far as it still being listed in the dealer brochure, I suppose they get around that by printing a disclaimer that everything is subject to change without notice.
My Father had a 1959 Dodge that had the automatic dimmer. After awhile, it became pretty annoying because it seemed as though it was constantly flipping back and forth all the time. Even though I was only 8 years old at the time, I still remember him pulling off the road one night, getting a roll of electricians tape out of the glove compartment, and putting a piece of it over the electronic "eye" in the center if the mirror. That stopped it from working and my Dad was happy. So is it any wonder I'm prejudice towards mine?

Re: Auto dimming rearview mirror
Great i can go out in the dark now.
Kings the local chrysler dealer fitted it for free today, many thanks if you read this.
I think the advert for the actual car that i purchased swung the deal, as it said it was fitted with auto dimming mirror.
I have mixed views as to what or which model of crossfire has them, some say ‘04s others just american specs, others just what it comes with. ? ? ?.
Whilst i was waiting to collect the car a guy took delivery of a new srt, that had the standard one also.

Re: Auto dimming rearview mirror
Rob,
Would you happen to still have the said brochure stating that the car comes with an auto-dim mirror? Like you, I miss not having it as it was on my last 3 cars and it's on the wife's car.
If you do manage to find the brochure, would you consider loaning it to me for a bit?! I'll take good care of it and ensure it comes straight back to you as soon as I've hassled the dealer!
Cheers!

Re: Auto dimming rearview mirror
Thought I'd see if there was any new information on this subject. I understand that only the 2004 XFRs came with the auto dimming mirror, so my 2005 SRT6 Roadster didn't come with one. And if I had a coupe I could live with it, but I think it almost dangerous to have the flip up mirror in a roadster. If it's just getting dark and headlights are blinding you from behind, you flip the mirror and see the blue sky that hasn't fully darkened yet. Or maybe worse, in an urban area, with the mirror flipped up you get intermittent views of the street lights or neon signs, what have you, instead of traffic behind you. Flipping the mirror down doesn't help much as the interior is lit up so much that you see that instead of a rear view. So, has anyone tried to order a 2004 mirror, even if they don't have a 2004? Or did Chrysler need to see a VIN before they would sell it? Or has anyone tried one of the aftermarket self dimming mirrors? Such as:
http://www.rpminnovations.com/rearview_mirrors.htm
Or
http://www.autoanything.com/mirrors/...0A1926947.aspx
These normally require a wire run in the windshield surround, but I was wondering if they could be wired into the garage door opener power? I wouldn't get the one with all the bells and whistles, already have a temperature read out on the dash and never could understand what good a compass was in a car, where you have to follow the road rather than a compass heading. Any thoughts?

Re: Auto dimming rearview mirror
ok guys this is what happened and how i got the dimming mirror fitted.
i tried all my best negotiating skills, and NO the dealer would not give in.
i then tried the legal stuff, association of motor manufactures for 1 and office of fair trading.
got nowhere,
chrysler said no we don't care, you bought the car you should have checked before you signed and paid.
then i remembered, i had bought the car pre-registered from an advert that showed the actual car, with reg no and photo, bingo!
the advertisement for that actual car stated auto dimming mirror fitted.
so i went back showed the dealer the advert, he put his hands up and said ok and then wired and fitted it as an extra at their own cost not chrysler.
the wiring is simple to do, runs up from mirror into interior light recess then across to the pillar and down to fuse box behind steering wheel and dash, details posted earlier and in workshop manual, can give page no if you want and detail instructions.
