look for "Mystery no start issue"

Re: Won't Start

I read all the posts on the mystery no start, but the OP of this thread seems to have the exact same problem I am.
I already re-soldered the RCM, and I have a new Bosch CPS that I am going to install this week.

The problem I am having is that almost one a day when I go to start my car, I turn the key and the starter doesn't engage. All the normal lights come on and everything else electrical seems to work fine. No strange sounds..etc.
Then I turn the key fully off, and turn it back to start and the car fires up fine everytime.
No other problems and the car runs great.
I checked with my ultrguage and no codes are thrown, and no pending codes.

Just wondering if anybody has any ideas as to why this happens.
When I install the new CPS this week I am going to take some time and trace all the grounds (that I can find), and check the cables to the starter...etc.
Besides that, can anybody think of anything else I should do?
This is my only car and I need it to be reliable as I depend on it to get back and forth to work.

Re: Won't Start

I looked at the Repair Manual and these are the causes printed there. My bets are on the ignition switch or the stater solenoid circuit if there are no clicks.

STARTER FAILS TO
OPERATE.
1. Battery discharged or
faulty.
1. Refer to Battery in the Diagnosis and Testing section of
Group 8F - Engine Systems. Charge or replace the
battery, if required.
2. Starting circuit wiring
faulty.
2. Refer to Starting System in Group 8W - Wiring
Diagrams. Test and repair the starter feed and/or control
circuits, if required.
3. Ignition switch faulty. 3. Refer to Ignition Switch and Key Lock Cylinder in the
Diagnosis and Testing section of Group 8D - Ignition
System. Replace the ignition switch, if required.
4. Park/Neutral position
switch faulty or
misadjusted.
4. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch in the Diagnosis
and Testing section of Group 21 - Transmission. Replace
the park/neutral position switch, if required.
5. Starter solenoid faulty. 5. Refer to Starter Motor in the Diagnosis and Testing
section of Group 8F - Engine Systems. Replace the
starter motor assembly, if required.
6. Starter motor faulty. 6. If all other starting system components and circuits test
OK, replace the starter motor assembly.

Re: Won't Start

If it were me I would replace the starter if the wiring to it wasnt corroded. Classic solenoid not engaging. A starter on its way out will do just that, work fine 9 times out of 10. It will only get worse.

I agree with the starter/solenoid advice, but still...

As I always do, I must ask - how old is your battery, guys?

My battery is just over 2 years old, but just to be sure I am going to have it load tested.

I am starting to suspect that the starter is the real problem. This morning I went to start it and for the first time I heard it try to engage and then stop. ( up to today it never made any type of sound, just didn't do anything ). I turned the key off and then back on and it fired right up. As soon as I get a chance I'm going to check all the wiring to the starter. If the wiring or the battery isn't the problem then I guess I'll pull the starter and have it tested.

Thanks again.

Re: Won't Start

I had this problem last week, turns out is was the crank sensor to have gone. It eventually gets worse and worse until it wont turn on OR it just cuts out! Cost me £60 for the part and several hours to install :) Good luck buddy!
