Plastic Channel on Roof Peeling
The small plastic channel on the roof of my SRT-6 has progressively been chipping and peeling off for the last few years. It is really beginning to become an eye sore. It's also odd that only the passenger side is experiencing this. Is this a common issue? Have any of you dealt with correcting this?

I think you will find it is aluminum, my passenger side is pealing as well not as bad as that though. You used to be able to buy a new part that was already painted. Maybe they are still available, or you could repaint it.
To take it out you pry up from he back to start. |

As 180 indicated the are aluminum and can be taken off by beginning at the open hatch and pulled upward. The alternative is buying new @ $156 a piece at the supplier listed in the attached link. After taking to a body shop, they recommended just buying the new trim piece, as their price competed closely with the price of a new one. Thanks for the help, guys!

I have wondered what they would be like if you covered them with chrome tape, I do not think they would look too bad. One of mine is going on one edge but I am not worried about that.

Several years ago I had the same problem, took the advise of a member and bought a roll of vinyl tape at a craft store. Mine are black so an easy match, works great!

I removed the one on the drivers side today. Not too difficult, but I do have some good tools to pull with. Think ice pick that is bent 90 degrees, some with hocked ends and some just a straight 90. I also used a piece of vinyl to shield the paint of the roof from the tools. Once it is started from the rear it comes out of it's grove in the rubber seal. It is shaped like a "T" with the vertical leg squeezed down into a grove in the rubber. The rubber is glued to the car. The trim piece is fairly rigid, so working carefully I was able to remove it without bending or twisting. Simple lift it out of it's grove starting at the rear.
It is sanded and prepped; tomorrow I'll purchase/order Dupli-Color self etching primer and cover coat with Mopar Graphite Metallic both in spray cans. A little silicone grease and it should slip right in again; Better than new. |

The suggestions above are all good and each has a slight variation; tape (chrome OR stainless); paint (body color). I have two additional variations I have used: buff the stainless strips and clearcoat them; latest version was to strip the clearcoat from the buffed stainless version and repaint them the SAME color as the trim accent. This looks great as it appears as a natural extension of the cars lines/trim. It also 'matches' the wheels and thus appears as a natural look to the car and not an afterthought. My SRT is Graphite Metallic and the grey trim and now grey roof strips look natural and accentuate the car nicely, obviously some other car colors may not have the same results. Painting the roof strips is not difficult, but be very careful not to bend them while working with them.
BTY, the repainted grey roof strips look like a natural extension of the windshield trim and honestly looks like the car should have been painted this way originally ! |

Hi guys, FYI I believe this is caused by sun-damage. This happened on my Crossfire also, so I just opted to have them repainted whilst doing some other maintenance work.
