Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
1 Attachment(s)
I just about busted out laughing this morning while reading today's New York Times, page A10. The article was about CERN's new collider. I'm interested in the subject because my father does engineering and design work for the LHC. In any case, this is an argument for hiring technically literate editors.
Is this the biggest scientific boner ever made by traditional media? |
Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
I have run into this throughout my military career. Writers throw terms around casually that have very exact meanings. They don't care what the results are, in fact they like the notoriety, no matter who is hurt or great harm is done.
Luckily, as a whole, they tend to be very lazy. If you give them interesting releases they usually us it intact with no attribution. However, when writing about the past, they have to do "research" and their natural tendencies show through. |
Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
So much of this 'bad press' is simply because the idiot media has heard that it may be possible, at the energies the Collider can produce, to create mini-black holes which, of course, could SWALLOW THE WHOLE EARTH!
Of course, the mini-holes (that sounds dirty for some reason) wouldn't last for more than a nanosecond or so but that doesn't matter because it's particle physics, a mysterious domain for nearly every layman. I'm mondo excited about this; maybe with this collider we can put to rest some of the true mysteries of the sub-atomic world & quantum physics. Then again, IT COULD BE THE END OF THE WORLD:rolleyes: ! |
Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
Sorry guys, I think my sense of humor may be way too subtle, so I'll explain what I found funny (besides the actual lawsuit itself):
The LHC is called the "Large Hadron Collider". A Hadron is a type of subatomic particle. If you look carefully, the New York Times article in the picture I showed misspelled Hadron as Hardon. A Hardon is....well...I'm sure you know what that is. The idea that the Swiss would be making a "Large Hardon Collider", which when you think about it, is pretty disgusting, made me laugh. |
Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
No Sonoronos, your humor isn't subtle; we're just BLIND!
I can't believe I didn't spot that! Hardon colliders.......sounds gay to me......not that there's anything wrong with that. |
Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
I missed that part completely.
What interested me was the fact Konopinski was one of those who studied the possible chain reaction but most sources credit Edward Teller as the first to bring this theory forward to the Manhattan Project leadership as a real concern. |
Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
I dunno, I found this bit sort of silly as well:
Mr. Sancho, wo describes himself as an author and researcher on time theory, lives in Spain, probably in Barcelona, Mr. Wagner said. Apparently there's a lot wrong with this article. |

He probably lives in Barcelona? Is he some sort of fugitive? Or is there just a huge community of time theorists living in Barcelona, making this a logical assumption? A known rip in the space/time continnuum that leads directly to Barcelona, perhaps? Apparently there's a lot wrong with this article. |

GEORDIE AND SCOTTY WON'T BE ABLE TO DO A DAMM THING 'CAUSE THE ENTERPRISE IS IN THE STRAIGHTS OF HORMUZ! So, we can, once again, blame it on GW Bush.:p 17 mile loop is under Switzerland and France, I think. Enjoy your Crossfire while you can. roadster with a stick |
Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
So if cute little black holes are formed then the Swiss can blame the French and the French can blame the Swiss.
I"m still waiting for the next Ice Age because of *GASP* global cooling. Oh wait, now it's global warming. No doubt the planet will overheat, right after it freezes. That is if it doesn't get devoured by ill-behaved black holes first. Large Hardon Collider........hmmm, I wonder if GM really has Pornstar installed on their vehicles. |

Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
OMG!!! that is SOO funny!

Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
What a silly doomsday prediction - little black holes !!
What's really going to happen is that a trans-dimensional gate will open up and allow Cthulu & Yog Soggoth to emerge and eat the Earth. |

Got it on the first read, cracked up!

The naysayers are all just really afraid that these experiments will attract the Borg. They're just too embarrased to say it.

Bush is a BORG,,,, that is just freaken inspired!!!!! |
Re: Is This Why People Don't Trust Science?
Well if they do create black holes at least they've created a hardon to fill them with....:D

Why do you always have to bring politics in to it. :p Never catch me doing it. roadster with a stick |
