I never miss the Perseids, either. In fact, the missus & I have been taking a weeks vacation around peak time for the past 25 yrs. or so.
As for the Orionids (& the Leonids later this year) we usually miss them because it's either cloudy (like today, with rain predicted for the next 3 days) or it's flippin' cold.:(

As to the rest of you: if you've never caught a meteor shower you're missing one heckuva show. Drive out of the city somewhere dark, get a lawn chair (or chaise lounge), lean that baby as far back as it will go, grab your favorite beverage & stare up.
