On my 2+ hour drive in to work today (damn snow) There were reports of a earthquake about 40 miles west of Chicago! Magnatude 4.5 is what's been reported. Anyone feel it? Everyone's Crossfire ok?

It woke me up. It was a 4.3 magnitude centered in Virgil,IL (about 48 miles west of Chicago). I am about 5 miles South East of that and it shook my house pretty good for about 30secs at 4am.

That's pretty far out....has this happened in that area before? I am surprised Gary and FP aren't all over this....glad you didn't have any damage...

This part of the midwest sits upon the largest fault line in the world. There has been a few small ones in the past 15 years but nothing like this. WGN news is reporting no injuries or damage has been reported anywhere so that is good.

I know southern IL had one last year....along the Wabash river area...and I am aware of the fault line, just thought it was more south....than north...nothing on the news about here...

I didn't feel a thing. But i did check the crossfire to make sure she was ok. However, i did feel the last year's earthquake.

I felt a quake once, in the 80's. I lived in lower Michgan at the time. Not sure what year, but I was sitting on the ground around 8pm EST and felt something in the seat of my pants. "That is odd" I thought. I was sitting next to the St. Joe River and noticed the water was "rippel-y" and stirred up.


STILL did not get it.


Got to work next morning and a lady said, "Hey, did ya feel the earthquake last night?"

RIght away I "Got it". :cool:

yep, that is how I remember it...that southern IL area shakes from time to time....down there where all the rivers meets....

I remember one in '87. I remember feeling it a little as I was doing homework....... my glass of Mountain Dew got those "ripples".

EVERY DAMN channel has nothing but that on......what quake! slept thru the whole thing !!!

Damn wife bitchin that "how can you sleep thru that" she thought the local train down the street derailed!

Then she had to wake me up....."well take the puppy out and take a look down the street"....took the puppy out and no I didn't look down the street, damn more snow and cold....now I have to snow blow the yard again cause the dog is peeing on the sidewalk......

Come in and its on the TV and wife is telling me "see I told ya"

We had one here in Minnesota that was a 4.1 in '93. I thought, holy shnikey's... an earthquake here??? Makes ya wonder if maybe we really do need volcano insurance... that might be the next thing to hit us. LOL

Haven't personally experienced an earthquake. I've been through innumerable huricanes and even experienced what meterologists called a '100 year flood' in '94 in Houston. Saw the river rise about 40'...Flooded a lot of the town... turned where I grew up into an island of sorts...
