One of the guys at the SPACEPORT did the math...

Granted it wasn't a smooth deceleration, assuming he was going 70mph, it would have taken just over a half a second at a deceleration rate of about 5.5g to come to rest.

At 100 mph, it would have taken 0.408s at 11.2g to come to rest.

All of the above is quite survivable.

You know, the way the hood crumpled deflected the wood mounts away and kept them from penetrating the windshield.

This kid is a seriously lucky son of a *****...

Pizza, I responded to an auto accident very similar to this one a few years ago. The guardrail was 2 1\2 to 3 inch pipes welded together like you see on pedestrian walkways. There was 3 guys in the car and it hit at a high rate of speed. The top bar went through the windshield and back window no problem. The bottom bar went through the front of the car, the cowl, the dashboard, the guys chest in the front seat, the seat, the chest of the guy in the back seat and the back seat. Remember that this was one long piece of pipe still connected on one end to the guardrail. The sight of the car on our arrival was very similar to this one. There was 2 fatalities. The drunk driver kept saying " You gotta help my buds". Oh, and the guy in the back seat was still alive when we got there and was watching us remove him.

EDIT: With two fatalities, I guess not.

I think the 3" hole through the middle of his chest did him in. I was told that they couldn't put blood in him fast enough to replace what was comming out.
