First Italy, now Japan

Not sure how much I will be online the next week. They sent me to Milan in September, now, in about 25 minutes, I board a plane for Tokyo.

So if I seem a bit absent, you know why.

If they send you with a one way ticket, take the hint and start looking for a new job.😀

I could live here, easily. Wonderful, friendly people; high standard of living, etc.

Made some great memories today as I got a tour of my sons' ship (led by my son) and spent the day with his wife.

You could add a little detail to the pics, Yokosuka being the US naval station in Japan for support of the 7th fleet. Formerly a Japanese shipyard etc.
What about the mini sub, US or Japanese?

That ship looks like it's rigged for ELINT operations...

I was under the impression that the mini-sub was a shell, just there to attract tourists to the store.

The most interesting thing I learned about the base is that dry dock #4 was built in 1905. Not quite bit enough to hold my sons' ship, but pretty big.
Didn't get a photo of it, as Kevin came walking up just as we made it that far.

My son's fellow CPO had access to the 'radio room' and he took me in there - I was not allowed to get near the cryto stuff, but did get a good look at the older analog HF / VHF / UHF stuff as well as a briefing on the antenna networks on the ship. (Antenna science being my favorite part of what I do.)

The ship is certainly capable of ELINT, to be sure, just based on what I saw and what I was not allowed to access (or even look at).

My cheapskate son and Yuki bought a car when they got back to Japan in August. 3 cylinder, 2002 Suzuki.(It is discipline like this that meant they were capable of paying cash for a $107,000 house on a sailor's pay after twelve years of marriage and fourteen years in the Navy.)
The car is sixteen years old and has factory, touch screen GPS. Their consumer tech is way ahead of ours.

What size house did your son & his wife get for $107,000? I've heard that houses and apartments are very compact in Japan.

It was a townhouse in Chicago - he was at Great Lakes for three years, ending in August of 2018, when they moved back to Yokosuka.
My hotel room here is probably not even 225 square feet including the bathroom.
