If you see a turtle on the road, please do something! Move her in the direction she is heading. Female Eastern Box Turtles, as well as other turtles will soon be on their journey to lay their eggs. They have been doing this their whole life. Help them cross by moving them carefully off the road into the direction they are headed.

Note:The breeding season begins in April and may continue through fall. Box turtles usually do not breed until they are about 10 years old. This late maturity is a result of their long lifespan, which can range up to 50 to even over 100 years of age.

Fished one of these Red eared sliders out of the pool and returned him to the wilds. (We are surrounded by nature preserve and enjoy many forms of wildlife) Also moved a large snapping turtle out of the road next to the house.
Pic #1 Slider (Name comes from red on neck) Pic #2 is snapping turtle, larger and with a long tail. They have a powerful bite and will use it as a defense, fast and will whip around and bite and scratch-be careful.

If at any time, a crack is seen in the shell or another injury, take the turtle to a wildlife rehabilitator or vet for help. Even a turtle that is severely injured can remain alive for a very long time given their slow metabolisms. Oh, just a heads up, the turtle may kick its legs in protest or may even pee (on you) like frogs usually do hoping you will put them down. Don't drop the turtle!

They aren't just on the roads, fished this out of the pool on my daily pool walk around. Many mornings there's something to fish out; turtles, raccoons, possums, and occasionally a snake !
