What's behind the seats?
Hello All,
I just acquired a 2004 coupe, with only 23,000 kms, and love it. Does anyone have pictures, or can anyone tell me what's in the enclosed area behind the seats I understand the subwoofers are there but I'm curious to know what is all in there? I assume suspension components? I'll get around to removing the top plastic cover myself but in Canada, without heat in my garage, it's something I won't be tackling until the spring. Thanks for your help. And...Merry Christmas and all the best in theNew Year. ,Randy |
Re: What's behind the seats?
Do not drill into it. The gas tank is in there. You can find the shop manual on this forum and download a copy. It has all the info you need. Just search for it.

Thanks for getting back to me...I had no intentions of drilling though. I'll look up the shop manual to satisfy my curiosity.

Re: What's behind the seats?
Your shock absorbers are on either side of the cargo area under those button down fur like covers. Easy to get to.

Re: What's behind the seats?
Well...I suspected that shock absorbers would be there, wasn't sure about the gas tank, and I checked out the shop manual. The shop manual doesn't show a picture of the areea without the trim panels. I'm wondering why the separation between the seats and the cargo area has to be so high. It would be nice if the middle wasn't so high...a lower pass through to the cargo area. If any one has an actual picture, or I can be directed to a picture, that would be great.
Thanks again, Randy |

Re: What's behind the seats?
Now we're talking! That's more like what I wanted to see. Do you know if there is any reason why the metal has to be come up so high? The middle of the metal panel from the top section, could it be cut-out, down to what appears to be a seam line, or is there something behind there? I'm guessing the gas tank fill tube is there.
Thank's a bunch. ,Randy |
Re: What's behind the seats?
Unfortunately I cannot help beyond the photo. I found the photo as part of an ebay listing for a special cutaway Crossfire body that was produced by Karmann. I knew that the photos would provide valuable insight from time to time as we will hardly ever disassemble our cars this much.

Re: What's behind the seats?
the bulkhead is that high because it houses the gas tank, and for structural reasons it is the size it is because some engineer calculated the force requred to protect the tanks shell from being crushed and poping from a side impact, thus spraying you with fuel and BBQing your butt.
