Air Conditioner Seems to be Intermittantly Shut Off
Air Conditioner Seems to be Intermittantly Shut Off
We have had a REALLY hot sumer here in L.A. (lower Alabama) this summer, so my A/C is always running. Lately, though, it seems that the on board computer (OBC) shuts it off every now and then. One time, the A/C shut off for 5 seconds and then it came back on. It reminds me of starting the car; once the engine has started up and passed the tests?, the OBC then turns on the A/C; it's like 4 seconds after I turn the key.
Has anyone come across this/know what is causing it/is it normal?
Thanks,
Chris

When the AC shuts off, are you under heavy acceleration?
Only thing I know is when the car is floored (or close) the ECU will disengage the magnetic clutch and the AC compressor until the car is back to normal conditions, usually only briefly....

I am not flooring it when the A/C shuts off; I rarely let 'er loose because I'm driving in traffic. I figured the OBC is shutting it down for the sake of the engine, but it isn't happening consistently enough for me to pinpoint it.
Nice ride!

Re: Air Conditioner Seems to be Intermittantly Shut Off
In very hot conditions, when standing at idle or in stop and go traffic, my SRT AC shuts off on occasion.
I always thought it was because the engine was overheating and the computer did it. But it would be an assumption to say that is the case.
It has seldom been an issue so I haven't been concerned.
Should I be?

Re: Air Conditioner Seems to be Intermittantly Shut Off
I too, have a similar problem. When my wife and I were heading down to the St. Louis get together, we had the air on all the time. Suddenly, I felt it getting a little warm. I had the blower on 1 and there was no red light to show that the air was on. I turned it to 1 and a half, and the red light came on and the air conditioning was working. I notice that the red light never comes on in the one half position. Also, I had the air on and the blower in the 1 position and everything was fine, then, there was a clicking sound around the glove box and I looked to find the red light going on and off. I switched the blower to the 1 and a half position and everything was fine. I'll be bringing the car in for the 15000 mile checkup in a couple of months so I'll have them check it. They probably won't be able to get the air conditioner to do what I just described, so any help from the forum would be appreciated. Is it the pressure sensor? Or a bad relay? I apologize for the rather long post, but maybe we can all get something out of this. Thanks in advance!
Re: Air Conditioner Seems to be Intermittantly Shut Off
The clicking around the glove box may be a leaf that has fallen into the fan. It's an easy fix to open the fan box and check; just don't drop the plastic clips that secures the lid down between the foot rest and the firewall. It happened to me and I had to get my eight year old daughter to reach in and get it out.
Re: Air Conditioner Seems to be Intermittantly Shut Off
As for the chance that a leaf might have gone down in the vent, I don't think that's the problem - the red light wouldn't come on and off in sync with the clicking if there's a leaf in there. No, I really believe this is an electronic problem - not a physical one.
Re: Air Conditioner Seems to be Intermittantly Shut Off
I came to this post with a similar problem. Not only is my A/C compressor turning on and off, the fan is also turning on and off. And they don't seem to in synch with each other.
The A/C starts blowing warm air. I'll cycle the A/C on and off, dial the fan up and down and it'll recover. Or, the fan will just shut off. This is under normal driving conditions.
If it was just the compressor or clutch, I don't think the fan would also be affected. But, I don't know.
Any resolutions out there?

Interesting: my low coolant light has also been coming on AND my A/C fan has been intermittent.
Seems that they are related: https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ant-light.html
Looks like I'm probably looking at the wrong fan.

Re: Air Conditioner Seems to be Intermittantly Shut Off
My symptoms from another thread.
"I have a sound in my coupe that sounds like a relay clicking (not something in the fan) and it appears that it is emanating from inside the dash where the passengers left knee would be.
Mine is somehow related to the AC system. It only happens if I have my fan selector in the off or first position. A good rap on the console in the general area of the clicking and it stops."
