Button behind gas pedal

Button behind gas pedal
Whilist having a lead foot I noticed that if you ram the gas pedal completely down there's a small button that the pedal depresses. Does this have a function beyond letting you know you're seriously gunning it?

SRT =OMG Button
It downshifts the tranny and gives you a blast of power.
In the old days we called it passing gear.
