Can't get windshield clean

I think the first owner of my Crossfire either waxed or put RainX on the windshield because in almost 2 years I have been unable to get a streak free clean windshield. Anyone have any ideas?

Well body shops use 0000 steel wool to get glass clean.

Lacquer thinner won't hurt glass, just make sure you stay away from any paint.

We have just started to use them, before that we used calendars from the year before as we could buy them as NOS (New Old Stock). We are a pretty cheap bunch, MrM would feel at home here.

Yeah that helps. Funny too. I can always count on your Canuck humor

There is a reason I asked the question.
Why don't you wait until I give it and then you can be really sarcastic?

Some just get hard of hearing. It may not be age related.

The year is important because some model years spent time stored on parking lots. Limestone Gravel parking lots put layers of lime dust on the windshields and morning dew turned it to carbonic acid.... etching the glass. Short of polishing compound, there is little that can be done.

Strong pressure with cleaning fluids may stress the windscreen glass and cause a stress fracture. It is how mine broke spontaneously the day after I carefully polished the haze. This after a glass guy explained to me how lime dust etches window glass. A little research had previously told me my 2006 model was stored in SC for a year on a gravel lot.

Probably would.

They still make that stuff?

Thanks for all your responses, my car is a 2008. I still think it is a coating or wax as it seems to smear when cleaned. I have tried rubbing alcohol, various glass products and vinegar/distilled water combo. It may just require cleaning after cleaning to get it clear.

Re: Can't get windshield clean

I had the same type of thing on my 08 windshield....looked like an overspray of something and just wouldn't come clean. Finally I bought a bug sponge and some Pro Goof Off. I applied a small amount on the sponge and spread on the affected area. I let it sit for about 15 seconds and then I took a straight, one edge utility blade and went over the area. WOW, it came off with ease! I of course then proceeded to apply more "goof off" and cleaned the entire area. Again, I suggest you spray onto the sponge and not directly to keep from getting all over other things. Hope this works for you....let me know.

If you are using micro fiber towels to clean them, stop. They will steak every time.

Re: Can't get windshield clean

I consider myself pretty good at this. If I have a smeary, nasty windscreen, I'll try a detergent (Dawn) first. I use cotton terry towels.

Try Clay bar/instant detailer-just like on the paint.

Meguiar's Ultimate Compound-this has done wonders for me!

As a last resort: solvent.

Always be careful.

Turpentine removes pine sap, a usual culprit. I've used methanol and even acetone. Like I said: be careful. It WILL muck up a paint job in a heartbeat.

I say clean your specs or contacts before deciding if the windshield is dirty.:p
