Mercedes-Benz Kicks off Wide-Ranging Recall for Some 2003-'09 Vehicles

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mercedes-Benz is recalling 404 units of 11 different models, including the 2009 SL and SLK, to fix a software problem that could result in problems with fuel gauge readings and the speedometer.

In documents filed recently with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mercedes-Benz said the problem involves an incorrect software calibration number coding. The problem "can affect a number of vehicle safety and emission functions," says NHTSA.

Among the issues could be problems with fuel-gauge readings, a stuck fuel-level sensor that may not be displayed in the instrument cluster, a check-engine light that may illuminate incorrectly and a speedometer that "may be out of tolerance."

"In the event of a vehicle crash, the electrical fuel pump may not receive a crash signal that is required for the fuel pump to disconnect and prevent future fuel delivery as designed," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem.

The recall involves the 2006-'08 M-Class and R-Class; the 2005-'09 SLK; the 2005-'08 C-Class; the 2003-'04 and 2006-'08 CLK-Class; the 2003-'08 E-Class; the 2004 and 2008 CL-Class; the 2008 CLS-Class; the 2004 and 2007-'08 S-Class; the 2003 G-Class and the 2003-'04, 2006 and 2009 SL-Class.

The recall is expected to begin in August. Dealers will recode the software calibration number at no charge. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz at (800) 367-6372.
