Last VW Beetle Rolls Off Assembly Line

MEXICO CITY - The last Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the assembly line Wednesday, 70 years after Adolf Hitler's government introduced Germans to a two-door passenger car that became an icon around the globe.

Competition from newer compacts and a Mexican government decision to phase out two-door taxis led Volkswagen to shut down its only remaining "bug" production line at its plant in Puebla, 65 miles southeast of Mexico City.

Workers painstakingly crafted the final car: a baby blue version marked No. 21,529,464 that will go to a museum in Wolfsburg, Germany, home of VW headquarters. Adorned with a Mexican flag made of flowers, the car was serenaded by a mariachi band playing "El Rey," or "The King."

 

heheheheh nice.. actually just heard about that, i was at the vw dealership looking at touregs.. she's looking at a a6 also(she has one now), but it's a bit boring for my taste, and the relability and quality seem to be in question..

heheheh i have a friend with a dropped '57 with a supercharger, sounds nuts..

yeah the toureg is pretty hot, interior is very audi, exterior is very vw.. handles real nice for its size.. i haven't really driven or riden in any comparable suv's, except a rx330(mightjlr's), so i couldnt give you a good comparison.. it def. exceeded my expectations, take the v8 with air suspension, with it on the lowest setting, in sport mode, and drive it like you stole it.. it might suprise you..
