Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
Forget the Phantom Slip er Grip , do a google search, they dont have a very good reputation at all and with big power they wear out fast.
Get a real torson lsd diff like a Quaife or Wavetrac with a lifetime warranty.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
I'll do some more research, and see what I can stir up. The problem with the WaveTrac on a road course, according to Justin, is that when cornering hard, and unloading the outside tire, the WaveTrac couldn't transfer the torque to the inside tire and adequately reduce the torque to the outside tire to minimize wheel spin. When I have watched the few videos of Crossfires on road course, you can hear them losing traction on the tight corners. See, you straightline guys have it easy:-))
Thanks for your feedback! Have fun!

Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
The Phantom Grip system pre-loads the spider gears to aid in torque transfer. That pre-load causes additional friction, which seems to be a problem for anything other than drag racing. I'm currently thinking about trying the road course without a limited slip. Justin says the Wave Traq doesn't help when the inside tire is unloaded in a corner.
There aren't many options, but durability is key for road racing.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
Is simple, the tighter the turn, the more a LSD will help. So more in an autocross than a road race.
In a drag race you want a locker more than an LSD though some have had good luck with one air lift.
The issue in a straight line is that engine torque will unload one rear tire while loading the other. With enough power you need to compensate for that. Relocating the battery over the unloaded wheel is another way.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
From what I read on the Wavetrac site, they can modify it to suit your needs using optional components. I wonder if Justin(Hustler) tried that, and if that would have addressed the issue he had with it. It is certainly better than the stock open diff., and calling it "garbage" must be disconcerting for the Wavetrac owners here who've invested in it; and guys like me who are still wanting one(I think).

Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
I used a Phantom Grip in a Neon Trans I drag racing, it really didn't work at all.
All it did was to put a spring between the 2 spider gears to push them into the
housing. It worked for a little while on the street but destroyed the diff on the track.
Peloquin might be able to help, They built me a batch of 5 Quife stye diffs for a Chysler
41te a few years back. Good guy to work with.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing

Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
Ok thanks. BTW Quaife does make an lsd for the SLK32. It's on their website. I just want to know if it will also work on na cars with the 6 speed.
Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
the N/A, the crossfire the slk320 up to 2002 and the slk32 up to 2002 all use the same differential the slk 230 is different
as standard tranny goes, almost any diff you can get to fit will work because there is no tcu with standard transmission. we have put ratio's from 265 to 3.46 in standard transmission mercedes with that being the only change.
Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
Well, I have the wave trac in both cars. It is still the best modification I have done to both cars. The drivability was a tremendous improvement. I can’t speak for those who round track, although I have done some road courses and do drive them hard on twisty roads. Again a great improvement over the open diff any day. You push any system hard enough it will unload. And certainly a locker wouldn’t be the ideal mod either, unless you want to replace tires all the time. It is the best you can do for an old platform.
Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
, all srt's are auto, all srt6's have 3.07 and and all others have 3.27 not 100% sure about the manual trans but i am 90% sure all std shift also have the 3.27 in otherwords only the srt has a different ratio,,and yes all crossfites have the same diff. but, 3.27 with a different ratio to answer your question the auto and std shift has the same diff and ratio except the srt which has the 3.07
did i repete myself i hope you understand anyway. jim

Re: Limited Slip Differential for Road Racing
Well I would like to try the Quaife, but I see the issues about fitment, so I can get a used one from a manual and air freight to them and this month they have 20% off on Mercedes units. There is one for $75 in Miami and I could air ship to them in London so they could convert it. They would also know exactly what type/size is needed for the Crossfire. That is why I would need the weight so I can get the price from UPS.
I had a 74 Porsche 914 when I was in Med school, really tricked it out, great little Volkswagen. Well VW-Porsche magazine in the mid 80s did an article on putting a Quaife in a racing 914, no other mods to the car and it really helped on the lap times and they were really impressed with it. Said it is great in the curves.
