Exclamation "Visitor" Messages are not "Private"

I've recently received a couple of "Visitor" messages and have responded to them.

But, I can't find any trace of them now. I've never before even seen this type of message. Where would I look for them?

Cue the eerie music, they have contacted you.
Have you had an out of body experience lately? LOL

I have had some odd messages myself, complementary ones by strangers to me. Not being used to complements, I ignored them.
Maybe they were after my body ........... for organ transplants.

What, is that Canuck humor? No, this was folks asking for the trim pieces I make and a PL for my DCAI. I answered them. I think. It's a bit different from PM's.

They had some sort of usernames too. Doesn't that mean they're registered members?

Too confusing for an old fart like me!

Dave, did you get these messages? Seriously? I was trying to help these guys out, and I don't know if I did or not!

Yes I did receive some odd messages and when I looked they did not appear in the PM list. I now suspect that these come from something like Facebook or something similar via a cell phone.
I am not up on this stuff and frankly not interested. I do not need a phone that runs my life.

Dave, I certainly agree with that! I hate cells. My wife has ours right now...in Virginia!

Is this a new "feature" since our forum move? I've never seen or even heard of this before now.

One of the attendees at Texas Motor Speedway last weekend liked the trim pieces you made and asked where I got them. I gave him your forum name so maybe one of those messages was from him.

Edit: Go to "View Public Profile"
when you click on your forum name and it will display "Visitor Messages". I can see the messages you received.

I think there is a link to facebook, there is a page that mentions 'friends', I did not have any.......... strange but true.

Somehow you can call up chats between members, I will not say who but one member is getting his wife a hammer-less revolver with pink grips. this chat also contained a comparison of 9mm and 38 ammo. He carries a gun and his wife will to, don't mess with XXs wife, they'll both pop you. I just stumbled on it.

I think it's Facebook or that new thing here.

Visitor messages are not private which means anyone can go to your profile and read these messages
You can disable visitor messages by going into your Edit Options under the User CP (upper left)
and unchecking the box "Visitor Messages"

More info below as it appears in the messaging index

Yep-that was him. Ask him to re-send in a PM or give him my email?

It seems that these messages are the opposite of private.

I WILL NOT be using this "feature".

Thanks, Gary!

Thanks for the info Gary. I just disabled the option. It has caused some confusion for me and others trying to contact me as well.

I have read these messages to you, so they are not private. One word is in capital letters to emphasize it, IMPRESSIVE.
James1549 and Valky have the messages shut off, FP, Beaner, SparkieSRT6, Bluecoupe, andrew, thebeep, JHM2K, oledoc2u are open as are many others.

There is a quicker way, one click and the messages and profile pop up.

Thanks for the heads up. After your post I had 235 visitors viewing my Visitor Messages so I disabled it too.

A message from Nolan from IB on this matter.

Just realized that Dave me talking about the visitor messaged people now have on their profile pages. I noticed many of them started about a month ago and you guys may have not had that feature prior to the upgrade. People can leave comments on another users profile page. I just left a "Hey Fernando" on yours. Any user can delete any comments on their profile if they don't want them on there and they are public. Usually users just say hello or post a thank you or something on there.

Hope that helps,
