Check oil light on after changing oil and filter
Check oil light on after changing oil and filter
Hi everyone,
I changed the oil myself over the weekend, and the check oil light is still on. (it was on before oil change). I checked the oil level on the dipstick and it's just below max. I did replace the plastic rings on the filter assembly... is there something I missed?
What's going on?.. do I need to reset the light?

If by oil light you mean the flexible service schedule wrenches for oil changes, follow the instructions from page 114 of the owners manual:
You may have to try this more than once.
If by oil light you mean the light that looks like an old oil dispencer / oil lamp, then you have a low oil level. It can be checked not only with the dip stick, but from the display:
• HI
Remember your car uses 8.5 quarts.
1. Turn key to the ON/RUN position.
2. Within one second press the ****/button twice.
3. The present status for days or distance is displayed.
Within 10 seconds turn the key to OFF/
LOCK.
4. Press and hold the ****/button, while turning
the key to ON/RUN again. The present status for
days or distance is displayed once more. Continue
to hold the ****/button.
After approximately 10 seconds, a signal sounds and
the display shows 7,000 miles (Canada: 11,000 km) for
approximately 10 seconds.
5. Release the ****/button2. Within one second press the ****/button twice.

A sensor in the oil pan allows oil level to be checked
without opening the hood. It provides an accurate measurement
of oil level, whereas the low engine oil level
indicator warns that oil level is definitely too low. With
the vehicle parked on a level surface, the engine is
warmed up and shut off for approximately five minutes.
When the ignition switch is turned to the ON/RUN
position, an ISO oil level icon appears in the trip odometer
window and a “clock” icon in the cumulative
odometer display. Pressing the **** to the left of the
speedometer twice within one second displays one of the
following messages:

Not saying to only put in 8 quarts, but that's what I tried and it worked for me. NEver seen a low oil alarm light.

Re: Check oil light on after changing oil and filter
yes to both of your questions, but see, I have only done one change.
The light coming on was before I did my change - the dealership changed it before I brought it home.
And I did check, it was right at "full" - I think it was Danimal at the Dragon who told me that it "was just oil sloshing around".
I saw the alarm a lot the weekend of the dragon. Never seen it since.

Re: Check oil light on after changing oil and filter
Someone listed the FSS reset and that doesn't work on my car. Being a Volvo mechanic all we have to do is hold in the trip reset button with the key off/out, then turn the key to position II (run not start) and keep holding in the trip reset. This changes the FSS on my car instead of that complicated crap.
Just an option.
Also about the emptying of oil, because I'm a mechanic I have a lift I can do my oil changes at so I know most of you don't have this option but if you do you can always adjust the legs so that the car isn't level to aid in emptying the oil out. Granted the windage tray and other internals to the oil sump (pan) will preclude from getting rid of all the used oil, but there shouldn't be a 1/2 quart left in there I don't think.

Re: Check oil light on after changing oil and filter
Red engine oil light keeps coming on. I had my oil changed, the receipt says 9 quarts then drove 1800 miles no problem. Then the engine oil light came on, slow down the light goes off, speed up it goes back on. Checked the oil and it looked ok. Dash says oil is ok. Drove 1500 miles and now the oil is brown? Help!
