Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
Well here is a question I would love someone to answer because I can't.
I have had my car nearly a month and it has run like a dream, last weekend we decided to take the wheels off and give the inside walls a good clean and repair a couple of small scuff marks on two wheels. As the driver’s side back wheel had a mark on it, that I have since repaired, I decided to put this on the passenger’s side so if someone scuffs the kerb (not me the wife - smack to back of my head by wife) at least it will be on the already marked wheel.
Now for the puzzle, the next time I drove the car the BAS ESP light came on, it went off when the ignition was switched off, however it continually came on when driving sometimes 10 minutes after start and sometimes 5 minutes, nothing wrong with the car and it continued to run smoothly. This happened Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. So I thought lets swap the rear wheels back again and guess what, yep you are right the light has not come on again over the past 2 days. What the **** and why ?

Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
Outside shot, but the only thing that comes to mind :
Usually the low profile tires on our cars are directional tires.
It's possible that by mounting with the rotation direction wrong, the previous wear pattern now causes the smooth circular rotation to be a bit interrupted, which in turn results in non-linear signals from the wheel speed sensors to the BAS/ESP module.
Like I said, just a wild a$$ guess.

circular rotation
Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
That's a strange one. Check if they are directionals, if not swap em back again and see if it is reproducible. Maybe something just wasn't tight enough or a bit off on the first swap and you corrected it when you changed things back. If it happens again I still don't have a clue but that would at least rule out a fluke :P
Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
They were definitely on ok and the tread is the same but will look at direction of the tyres as suggested, however I must be honest and say I don't really want to swap them again it case it comes back because all seems to be working fine at the moment, but I suppose time will tell.
What is a yaw sensor I have heard about this but what does it do and where is it. One bad thing about these cars is that they do have too many sensors on them and after reading lots and lots of post it nearly always seem to be the sensor that is faulty and not the actual car so in my opinion they just cause aggro !!!!

Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
I was going to suggest and say the same as what ala_xfire said! In my experience it will be the wheel speed sensors that are causing this, they can be pretty sensitive! When the BAS/ESP light comes on there is a "trick sequence" involving turning the steering wheel to get the light to reset and turn off. I have done this previously when I triggered the wheel speed sensors when I was doing some work on the car, did that sequence and light hasn't been on since!

Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
Thanks for the info, I did try this but it didn't seem to make any difference, maybe I was doing it wrong. Some say with the ignition key to run but don't start the engine. Has anyone ever tried this without the power steering on, nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel. so tried both with engine running and not (with a real struggle) and it didn't make any difference but still another day of motoring yesterday and light has stayed off. I would like to know the correct process to reset the sensors tho.
Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
Yep I agree no light no problem so don't plan on trying to make it happen again but just wondered for future on how to reset it.
Bill F thanks for the page number, its actually page 85 in my manual but again it doesn't say start the car just turn the key to on/run but then you cant turn the steering wheel without force as there is no power steering. If they mean start the engine that ok but I don't think they do mean that, so is it just me or is it not explained properly because you cant move that wheel without the engine running.

I could do it with mine, just got to put a little muscle into it. It is easier to do it on a smooth flat surface. I had to reset mine twice in almost 8 years that I've owned it.
I'm glad you was able to reset it.

Yes, however in my manual it is also in Chapter 3, page 88 and Chapter 5, page 147.

Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
When my BAS ESP light came on a few times I did the reset by turning the steering wheel all the way to the left and then all the way to the right while parked with the engine running.
One time the light went off after this procedure but on another occasion it only went off after turning off the car and restarting it.

Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
Next time you might check the tire pressure on both tires as these cars are really picky about differences between front to back and side to side rotational variations and what the computer reads off the speed sensor. I had tires put on and the guy put 32lbs in the r rear and 44 in the l rear and it set off the bas esp light and until I let the air out of the l side the problem persisted. I equalized the air and reset the bas/esp according to the procedure and all was good again.

Will do that, last time I checked a few weeks back they were equal but will check again and thanks jtaylortech3, it is easier with the engine running so will try that next time if it ever comes back. It seems these sensors are a pain.
Re: Come on who can answer this puzzle re a BAS ESP light problem
It is common for this to happen...Valk gave the right sequence. I just had wheels off both cars mounting new tires and cleaning rims... had to do both cars... In fact, I am doing the same thing with my MB I just bought for the spouse. Way too many electronics on this baby...
