Cant Fill car with Gas?
Got a call from a lady who somehow got my number, she lives not far from me.
Her's is an 05 Coupe, owned it since 2006 and now cant' put gas in it. Dealer is clueless and wants to put a new tank in.
What she means is that the pump clicks off after maybe a quart goes in. Sounds to me like either the filler tube is obstructed or a vent somewhere is not opening so that the tank can vent.
But I thought the filler neck itself was the vent. I remember this came up here a few years ago but I've searched with all the terms I can think of and cant find a thread. I've never owned a Coupe - is there something about them that is different from a ROadster that has to do with this? 'Cause I don't get it.

Re: Cant Fill car with Gas?
There is a strainer in the fill neck. The overflow would act as vent for the filler neck. Other than the stainer being clogged or the tank being full. There should be nothing obstructing a fill operation. Gas gauge broke?
There is a thread entitled "slow filling with fuel...or is it just me".Dave's post #15 says there are 2 checks valves, 1 of which cuts the tank off in case of rollover. Give it a read , hope this helps.

Her gauge works and sh'es so befuddled she took it to a dealer.
They were clueless and asked her to leave it a few days. She did not. It's sitting in her garage until someone can give her an answer other than the dealer's, "we dont' know and cant say what this will cost."

You say the tank is not full with a faulty gas gauge.

Dave, the gauge DOES work - I dont see where I indicated otherwise.
That was my first question to her - "Are you sure the car is not full?"
Sounds to me like we've diagnosed it. Now the question is, is a new tank the only option.
(Or a used tank from a wrecked car.)

Re: Cant Fill car with Gas?
use a match and stick it down in the neck and see if the flap is open. 😋Just a little humor to lighten the moment if all else fails check the repair manual maybe there's something in there about the filler neck,🤔

Re: Cant Fill car with Gas?
Okay took my own advice and checked the repair manual 180 is correct there are in fact two mechanical check valves in the filler neck one is Midway of the filler neck and is called fuel filler tube check valve and the other is at the bottom of the filler neck tube and is called fuel tank overfill check valve and in conjunction with those valves there are two other mechanical valves that work in conjunction with the EVAP system and they are called fuel tank vent / rollover valves, also as part of the EVAP system there is a fuel vapor pressure relief valve that is electronically controlled I seriously doubt it is the problem, for me I think it is either one of two problems either the fuel gauge is wrong and malfunctioning or the overfill check valve is stuck closed. I believe it's the overfill check valve. 🤔 Still thought the match ideal was funny 😂 but I guess I shouldn't say those things some people may take me serious.

Re: Cant Fill car with Gas?
If I was talking to you you would realize that from my tone of voice.
We did have a case where the gas tank was flattened when the vent did not work and the fuel pump created a vacuum as it pumped out the fuel. That stumped everyone 'till someone looked at the flat tank.

Re: Cant Fill car with Gas?
May not be a good idea 🤔 the center check valve opens going toward the tank and if you push a wire past it the flap will close on The Wire trying to pull it back and you will not be able to pull the wire out or tear the flap up. 😬
Re: Cant Fill car with Gas?
Sure this has been thought of and tried, but here it goes.
Does it happen at every gas station?
I have that problem at some stations, I either slight twist nozzle or pull out just a hair, all depends on the angle of the nozzle.
If I pull out a hair so the part I front of the handle does not ride on the body and just do 1st click, don't have a problem, but if I push all the way, the angle of the nozzle will shut it off sometimes.
