Default Nasty noise?

Well,

Not having much luck fellas.

On the way home tonight it developed a nasty noise:

Not the engine - sounds sweet.
Don't "think" it's the gearbox (at) as it shifts smoothly as normal.
Not suspension / drive train, as I can make the car make the noise in N & D. I have to rev it to maybe 3k though.

Noise is a tinny metallic rattle, most prevalent when giving it power under load, circa 1500-3500rpm. It could still be making the noise over 3500, but is probably getting drowned out by the engine by then.

I'm kinda suspecting exhaust? Maybe a baffle or buggered cat?

Any ideas guys, or have you had anything similar?

Thanks in advance as usual.

Most likely a catalytic converter coming apart.

Plus one on that thought, it has happened quite a few times. Careful re-welding of the split seam fixes the problem quite cheaply.

Cheers for the input guys.
I have a feeling it's the exhaust somehow.
I'm trying to get it into my dealer tmrw. Hoping it's something reasonably simple, as the exhausts are bloody expensive over here, with little aftermarket / pattern ones around!

Well guys,

It's one of the cats in the centre section. Noise from within.
That section is going to be replaced on Monday.

Not too bad in the end - £350 fitted.

The old cat is worth some good money, they will probably want to keep it. You should ask around what you can get for it. They may say that they deducted the price of it from the cost to you but I doubt it.
Look on this forum for a price of a used cat, you will be shocked.
I would guess 100 pounds. They have platinum inside as well as other pricey materials.

Yeh,

I was expecting it to be a lot more and the part hard to find, but all ok in the end.
Seems even the exhaust up until it meets the back box is SLK 320.

I'll look into a scrap price for the cat - cheers.

All done chaps.

I also had the ignition leads replaced and the crank sensor replaced at the same time.
It got rid of my slightly rough idling issue.
The crank sensor was precautionary, as I'm aware these can be an issue and I have no idea if its been replaced in the past.

Not looking forward to the day the back box on the exhaust fails - they are not even listed over here!! Fortunately, mine still looks quite solid.

The CPS is not really a service item, it either works or it does not, so you might replace it with one that fails next week, if it is not a Bosch sensor it may cause problems pretty soon as the pins on the connector are not as large as the Bosch ones and get bad contact.

I am currently dealing with the same issue, does anyone have suggestions on where to get the cat for a fair price?
