Default RCM or CPS problem

I am looking at an 04 crossfire manual that has a no start issue. I already have an automatic and absolutley love my car! The manual is having the no start issue. All the dash lights come on but he thinks there is no power going to the starter. He claims the car will crank if pushed off in 4th gear. Does this sound like an RCM problem or CPS? Thanks in advance for your help.

First, turn the key to "ON' and wait 30 seconds. Does the engine fan run at warp speed? If so, the engine control relay output from the RCM is bad - and the car would not start in this case no matter what you do.

SO, Make him prove that. If it starts, the car needs a pulse module, starter or starter solenoid.

Thank you for your help. I definately want to make sure the car can crank in 4th like he says before purchasing. I had issues a few years ago with my automatic and ended up having to replace the crank sensor and later the RCM. But I was unsure of this new car being a standard and all. Does the pulse module go by another name? I am unable to pull it up at the parts store online. Thanks again.

The student reference and the service manual both call it a pulse module. But I've only seen one PM fail in the nine years I've been in the group.

Also, there are two pulse modules:
  • One for Automatics that enables "turn to start" for autocranking.
  • One for Manuals that enables no "turn to start" for autocranking.
Both models arbitrate the signals from the key and ECM to cut out the starter at 400 rpm (when the engine starts).

I have a 6 speed manual and recently confirmed that the manual does not have a "pulse module"
Only on automatic models

Take a picture and show us your manual pulse module Mark.
We seem to have a bit of contention here.

But the pulse module takes an enable from the PCM and the input from the "Start" position on the ignition and engages the starter, when the enable from the PCM goes away (at 400 rpm), the starter cuts out. IF I have no pulse module, how does the starter cut out?

I know the service manual is often not accurate, but....

If you cannot get the starter to operate with the engine running then you have a pulse module in the manual transmission cars.
I had a six speed and I think that you could not get the starter to operate with the engine running, so I will say that the PM is in the 6 speed models.

I'm going with "yes they have a pulse module" and doesn't have connections on the end port like an automatic does..

Thanks for everyone's insight. I am looking at the no start car tomorrow. Now the guy is telling me it doesnt start at all. All the dash lights come on, but when you turn the key the lights go out and no start. Going to buy the car regardless of the no start, it's in great shape. I am hoping its the RCM, tighed just fixed my broken one for me 😀

The last thing you would want is to prove that the car is easy to start, that would result in an lmmediate price increase.

Just looked at the car, put my working RCM from my car in it but didnt fix the issue. He said he replaced the CPS a few years ago from local auto parts store. When you turn the key the starter clicks, but the car does not turn over. Not giving up on the car yet. Any other suggestions?

Have you checked for a good ground from battery to car frame, and also ground cables from frame to engine ?
Do this : connect between negative battery terminal to engine block with multimeter on ohms scale.
It should read real close to 0 ohms.

Try your battery or jump the existing battery. Could be a battery problem.

The price definitely dropped Without the car cranking I have no idea what shape the motor or transmission is in, a big gamble for me. You know I didn't even think about the simple fix of a bad battery. I guess I had a girl moment lol. He did have the battery disconnected when I got there. And I might have been more clear in my last post about the starter clicking. It only clicked once then silent and all dash lights go out, it was not a repetitive clicking. I plan on looking at the car again later this week. Hopefully he'll accept my offer this time and I can just wench it on the trailer and take her home to work on.
