Default 2006 NA coupe wing rattle

Hi all, I have a 2006 NA coupe with 28k original miles and I have recently noticed when I shut the rear hatch it sounds like a bag of bolts when the wing is in the lowered or, ‘park’, position. If I raise the wing and close the hatch it sounds like a bank vault. It also manifests as a rattle when the wing is down while driving. When the wing is up, no rattle. I have investigated the rear latch issue and that is not my problem. It seems when the wing is lowered and I tap on it or try and jiggle it there is some movement which is causing the rattle. I have checked the wing mounting points and all nuts are tight. I’m thinking there must be a way to adjust the wing mechanism so it either locks in the down position or forces the wing to park against the hatch with more pressure thus eliminating the movement which is causing the rattle... Any thoughts?

Cheers,

- Douglas

Are the roll pins in place? They are located on the shaft, near the rubber boot, where the power shaft goes into the interior of the hatch?
You should check for water under the foam inserts where the jack and air pump are located. If you have water in there you have a problem which must be corrected immediately . First remove the jack and air pump you can see into the lower area there and insert a piece of cardboard forward. If it comes back wet the mounting of your wing has lost it's seal. On the right side of the car under the foam your vacuum pump is located that operates the door lock. That water must be removed and prevented to reoccur, or you will have much more trouble to correct.
You say you inspected and found the "wing mounting bolts are tight". That is not clear in my mine. Are you talking about the bolts you see when the wing is up? I ask because, there are at least a dozen bolts that hold the entire wing assembly in place and those bolts can only be accessed by removing the interior plastic trim from the bottom/interior of the hatch. The motor is also mounted from the bottom and I suspect the rattle is coming from something loose from the interior side.

No, I've had the interior panel out and all nuts which hold motor and wing in are tight. Roll pins are intact. If I put some felt under the wing before lowering it it solves the rattles which tells me that the rattle is the wing clattering the hatch lid. Maybe they all do this and I never noticed it. Try closing your hatch with the wing in the up position and in the down position and see if it sounds the same.

I have the wing off my limited right now as I'm painting it, so I can't give it a test. I do recall a slight "rattle" more like a vibration when closing the hatch. Certainly nothing like "a bag of bolts" and never any sound when driving in the up or down position. In the down position there is a notch in the levers which raise/lower the wing; Perhaps that is not engaged? Just a guess. I believe the only way to fix that would be to try an adjustment of the gearing at the motors limit switches.

Addendum: I went out to my shop and took a look at the wing motor and gearing. There is no adjustment to those limit switches. The switches themselves are locked into position by small pins to the frame of the motor assembly, and the large gear which the arm of the switches contact on it's rotation is an one piece plastic with no adjustment. Even if you remove the motor with its small pinion gear and slip a notch on the larger gear it will make no difference as the timing of the on/off is strictly related to the lobes on the large gear and its contact with the arms of the limit switches.
The shafts that power the wing up and down are rectangular where they insert into the large gear. Thus they can be placed into the gear only in one of two ways; Each being 180 degrees from the other. That way you can insert the roll pin at the outer end of the shaft no matter how the shaft is inserted into the gear. IF THE LARGE GEAR is worn and thus no longer truly rectangular, then the shaft may not turn in it's full mode of rotation. That may be the only thing that could prevent the wing from fully closing, unless the pivot pins are worn badly at the levers which attach to the wing itself.

One other thing to look at are the rubber bumpers that are attached to the levers which raise and lower the wing. With the wing raised and standing at the side of the car look at the top of the lever which is attached to the wing. There are two rubber bumpers, one on each side that when the wing is closed should contact the cars body. They should both be in contact with the body in the stored/lowered position, keeping the wing from rattling when closed. They won't do anything when in the raised position. Might want to check that.

In the photo you can see the rubber bumper/stop I mentioned above. What appears white in the photo is new "Mortite" caulking cord sealant.
