Fuel Door won't stay closed?
Hey guys,
A co-worker of mine has an SRT-6 and asked me if I knew any reason why the fuel door wont stay closed/latched? When you press on the door, the 'plunger' goes in like it is supposed to, but the door itself doesn't latch. There is a tab sticking off of the door that has a hole in it - it appears as if a part is missing, but I'm not sure. Is there a schematic for the fuel door, or something that I can look at to try to figure this out? Is this a known issue? Thanks, Shawn |
Re: Fuel Door wont stay closed?
The hole is there because that's where the pin from the central locking goes through to keep the door locked. It's possible that that part of the system is not working. You can check by leaving the door open and locking the car with the fob and seeing if the pin comes out. If the door was closed it would go through that hole.

Re: Fuel Door wont stay closed?
AIG,
Thanks - I figured it out after you explained how it worked. Apparently the locking 'PIN' wasn't lining up with the hole in the gas lid. I got to looking around, and the tether that holds the gas-cap to the car was spun and twisted so bad it prevented the lid from closing all the way. When you went to lock it, the pin would then mis-fire and wouldn't make a positive latch. I 'unwound' the tether, and now the door lays nice and flush with the body and the locking mechanism functions again. Thanks for the help, Shawn |

I was about to take it in to the dealer and b*tch at them... Then luckily I figured it out prior...so I saved face a little. This seems to be the most common problem the the fuel door is the gas cap rubber string...or whatever its called... Now that I know what it is, I'm much more aware of it when filling up my tank and such... glad everything got resolved. |
Re: Fuel Door wont stay closed?
My gas cap tether kept getting in the way until it broke from being pinched so much! Now it's on my list of warranty items to have taken care of...

Re: Fuel Door wont stay closed?
Damn......you guys are pretty good. I was gonna suggest the tether being in the way, but you all beat me to it.
I did have a second plan of action though......... http://www.melianpetsupplies.co.uk/i...rew%20pack.jpg |
Re: Fuel Door wont stay closed?
Naaa....This would have made a much faster repair with no pre-drilling required !

Mine is doing this now. I noticed yesterday the rubber tether broke, but it didn't seem like there were any pieces wedged anywhere. My plunger is working fine, and i can close the door all the way, but it won't stay. It pooches out just a little bit - it's not catching. It almost looks like a piece is missing from the latch? Did a piece break off somehow?
EDIT - nevermind. I realized the piece that was still connected to the door was just the perfect length that it would stick itself backwards into the hinge of the gas door. I ripped it off and voila - it works now. |

Re: Fuel Door won't stay closed?
The 'tether' is attached to the gas cap. But just to be clear here's a photo:
