Transmission temp question

So, I have the code P0715 code with the sometimes not engaging in gear and RMPs going up and other times just rough gear shifting issue. I did the dielectric greace to the TCM first. Now I have made my home made transmission fluid level dipstick :)
I DO NOT have an IR temp tool. So I can't check it at 80*C. But my question is if I just go out and start the car and then put it in drive and check the level, is it safe to assume that is an accurate cold level?
And if so, and it looks correct there, is that a good enough guage that fluid is NOT low?
Or is it necessary to check it at the 80* temp also?
I have read the several posts re: this issue over and over but dont seem to see whether
both readings are necessary or not....
Please and thank you

Re: Transmission temp question

I would read it warmed up. I will add when I check mine in whatever car it is, I put the car in drive then reverse, then neutral and check in at running temp while in neutral not park.

Re: Transmission temp question

Ok. I think I am low on fluid. FINALLY found a spot of fluid in the driveway. Scoured the yard for a place where I could get the front end elevated enough to look under there. And thank goodness it DOES appear I have a transmission fluid leak. I am excited about this because I would like to go for the o ring repair before I try the conductor plate. Now I gotta keep my fingers crossed! Thanks for the answer Doc. Guess I'm gonna have to find a temp guage IR thingy! Lol

Re: Transmission temp question

Personally, after normal driving the car for 15 minutes or more, I would check the level and set it at 60mm or close.
