If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
If I were to find a very low mileage XF (not SRT5) being parted out, what parts would you recommend I glean? It needs to be parts easy to remove, and worth having around.
Obviously I can't grab everything, and the main issue my car is having now is a sticky ignition, which I think would be too time consuming to remove. I'm looking for easy stuff. Depending on the prices, I was thinking of spares for some of the sensors and control modules, since I think they are mostly easy to get to. I'm not completely sure where all this is located, I'm still learning. But generally: RCM crankshaft position sensor and bolt camshaft position sensor central locking pump module security control module What do you think? I know the risk of storing too many spare parts. I have a bunch of parts for my MiniCooper S that was totaled 2 years ago; haven't gotten around to selling them yet. So I need to exercise restraint ;) I'm interested in your comments, thanks |

alternator
belt tensioner and idler serpentine belt dome light assembly HEAD LIGHTS TAIL LIGHTS FOG LIGHTS wheels ( one each 18" and 19" ) grab all the fuses in the box, as well as the 3 big ones in the little box by the battery alarm module probably other stuff I can't think of just now. |
Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
:) I remember the 69 Buick Skylark I had, way back (no jokes please). I was going to buy another whole car to have just sit there, for any part I needed (if ever). Well, my new MRS said a resounding 'NO', and I never brought up that subject again. We're together 40+ years now, and this post brought me right back to that ultra nice 69 Skylark I had. It is a gamble to try to guess what parts you'll need down the road. All I have tucked away, is the Bosch CPS. Its sitting in my glove box and I don't even have the tools to swap it out on the road if it ever tanks on me. You would think I would at least put the correct tool in the back under the carpet (by the tire kit) but no, I haven't. So when do you ( barngal ) think you'll sell those mini parts (no I don't have one, it ties into the obsession to hoard parts I keep seeing here). Hope you don't need a part you haven't thought of, or passed by because you thought you would never need one of 'those'... :)

Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
My first car was a 69 Buick skylark also! I loved that car, good memories.
The MINI parts are still in the garage, I've just started pulling them out to sell. Usually if you have spares you won't need them, which is why its important to buy stuff cheap when you're able.. |
Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
Oh my gosh, we DID buy a wrecked suburban one time, to match the 77 that i was rehabbing.
At least the Dodge parts in the garage are just the stock ones left over from mods. Maybe this yearning for spares is to compensate for planning to NOT mod the XF... Lol.. |
Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
I'd concentrate on the Chrysler parts that are getting hard to find. Many of the MB parts used in our cars seem to be reasonably priced brand new.

Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
ala_xfire, thanks for the list. I have found a local wreck and am looking into those parts. I won't bore the forum by listing the prices they are asking (although I would be interested in feedback!). Most of the parts you mention are available (but NOT the lights!)
velociabstract, could you tell me which Chrysler parts are referring to? Also, are the struts on the roadster top likely to go out, difficult to find or replace? I can get the top for a very reasonable amount; the struts aren't included and I don't know what they are worth... thanks for all the help. |
Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
By struts I presume you mean the hydraulic lift cylinders for the convertible top mechanism. There are seven of them and in total they are worth $400.00 to Hydraulic Top Repair (who bought all seven lift cylinders that I had from a complete used convertible top that I bought from a salvage yard . . . just so I could get the rear bow molding which is no longer available from Chrysler). Now if you needed to replace yours and needed to buy new or rebuilt lift cylinders, I have no idea what it would cost but certainly considerably more than $400.00 for all seven.
PS - When you say you can get the top for a reasonable amount, are you talking about just the canvas top and rear window? If so don't bother because if it's the original OEM top the rear window adhesive is destined to fail and the top will be worthless. |
Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
No, the wrecker said he would sell me the complete top with the frame included (sounds like $300 is a deal) . Just not the struts. Car has 24K miles on it. He said there were 4 struts. Sounds like I should investigate that with him some more?
OK, if you are willing to give me feedback on prices I'd appreciate it. Also, the central locking module is $275 and there was no evidence of water damage…would that be a good deal? the alternator was $75, idler belt tensioner $45, I asked about the relay control module (pointed it out to him) and he is saying it is a relay fuel pump for $175; is the relay control module located on top of a relay fuel pump? Lastly, can the covers of the seats be removed and reinstalled successfully? thanks RED DOG |
Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
top assembly : good deal
RCM : too high alternator : good price tensioner: too high CLM - fair price |
Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
Thanks for the input ala_xfire. I thought the RCM was too high too. I can show him ebay prices.
I'm not sure what he is referring to about a relay fuel pump? |
Re: If I'm stocking up on spares from a wreck--which ones?
RCM / K40 / Relay Fuel Pump - all same same
